The Walkie Talkie’s primary purpose is for quick call set up and with group call capabilities while the Smartphone’s primary purpose is a mobile telephone with advance computing capabilities. In terms of voice communication the Walkie Talkies is half-duplex based on push-to-talk PTT concept while the Smartphone is full duplex based the call-connect telephony concept. With the development of walkie talkie apps for phone such as QoolTalk and Voice Ping the Smartphone is able to have Walkie-Talkie PTT capabilities. Till date only a niche group of PTT users have switched over to Walkie Talkie apps on their Smartphones for non-business or non-mission critical PTT communications. Reasons Why Majority of PTT users have stayed on with the Walkie Talkies 2.1 Walkie Talkie App is dependent on quality and availability of Wi-Fi or cellular data network for internet connection. For walkie talkie apps for phones to work all the Smartphones would need to be connected to the internet. In areas where there are no or weak Wi-Fi or cellular data connectivity the PTT function of walkie talkie apps would not work. Walkie Talkies point-to-point on the other hand are not dependent on operators’ network.

Being public networks the speed of voice transmission over Wi- Fi or network operators’ data network is dependent on their availability of bandwidth. When operating in a congested area where there is heavy utilisation of the networks during peak period the delay in sending and receiving of messages could be significant. Walkie Talkies do not suffer from latency as their medium of transmission does not rely on shared or public network. 2.3 Ease Of Usage When it comes to communication for a Walkie Talkie all it takes is a simple press on the PTT button and the user can begin talking. For the walkie talkie app user he has to first select the app run it and only after all the initialisations are done can be begin to use the PTT mode. 2.4 Ergonomics Walkie Talkies are designed in such a way where the PTT button and knobs are conveniently located for PTT usage. The shape the walkie talkies are also designed to be comfortably grippedand press to talk at the same time. On the other hand most smartphones are flat in design and some comes with wide screens which makes holding the smartphone for PTT usage difficult and unnatural. 2.5 Battery Life Typically walkie talkies’ batteries have very long life per charge and it is easy to carry spare batteries for extended usage. For the smartphones however their batteries have to be recharged each time it goes flat as most smartphones’ batteries are not easily removed and carrying spare batteries is not an option. 2.6 Speaker Loudness Walkie Talkies are designed to be used outdoor and hence are loud enough to overcome background noise in a noisy environment. Smartphones are designed to be slim and elegant in looks and generally they have speakers with low wattage power. As suchSmartphones’ speakers are not loud enough to be audible when used in a noisy environment. 2.7 Ruggedness in Design

Some models are even designed for use in hazardous environments. As such walkie talkies able survive abuse and rough handling by workers out in the field. Intrinsically Safe on the contrary with the exception of some ruggedize models are not designed for rough handling and for use in harsh working environments. Conclusion The walkie talkies would continue to be the dominant tool for business and mission critical voice communication for reasons mentioned above. The walkie talkie apps on the other hand would serve the needs of office executives and other non-business critical users who may not desire to carry more than one communication device to have PTT communication capabilities.
