History of the SAT : 

History of the SAT During 1933 Henry Chauncey, assistant dean of Harvard recommended the use of the SATs to test academically gifted males for admission to Harvard. In 1938 Chauncey presented the SAT to the College Board which abolished all used admission test to incorporate the SAT as its official college admittance test. (PBS, 2011)

Why Take the SAT? : 

Why Take the SAT? If you are planning to attend college, the SAT is one of the most important test to take. It helps students connect to colleges (CSU, UC systems and most private colleges) based on your SAT score. It is also used for financial support such as scholarships and merit awards.

Description of Items on SAT : 

Description of Items on SAT 10 section exam: 3 critical reading, 3 math, 3 writing, 1 essay 1 experimental question. The experimental is masked to look like a regular section, but it is a new SAT question. (Fox, Israel, O’ Callaghan, 2005)

Description of Items: Essay Sections : 

Description of Items: Essay Sections The Essay Section consist of a given topic. Students are asked to present and support a point of view on a specific issue/ topic. Examinees have only 25 minutes to write an essay therefore, the essay is not expected to be perfect- it is meant to be a first draft.

Description of Items: Critical Reading Sections Critical Reading Section consists of multiple choice questions based on: 19 Sentence Completion: Ex: A judgment made before all the facts are know must be called______ . (a) harsh, (b) deliberate, (c) sensible (d) premature 48 Passage- Based Reading multiple choice questions: There are passages followed by questions based on their content and comprehension. (Fox, Israel, O’ Callaghan, 2005)

Description of Items: Writing Sections 3 writing sections consist of: 14 questions on Identify sentence errors that assess ability to recognize grammar and usage errors Example: Even with a calculator, you must first have a basic understanding of mathematics if one expects to solve problems correctly (Students choose the correct error there are multiple choice letters under each underlined area.) 20 questions on Improving sentences in which part of a sentence will be underlined and there are multiple choice ways to correctly improve each sentence. 5 questions on improving paragraphs in which the student has to read an “early” draft of an essay and some parts of the passage must be rewritten. (Fox, Israel, O’ Callaghan, 2005)

Description of Items: Math Sections Mathematic Section consists of Multiple Choice Questions Number and operations Algebra and Functions Geometry and Measurements Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability 10 Student- produced response (grid-ins) where the students write the response to the math question. (Fox, Israel, O’ Callaghan, 2005)

Assessments used in Conjunction with The S.A.T. : 

Assessments used in Conjunction with The S.A.T. The PSAT (preliminary SAT) or NMSQT(national merit scholarship qualifying test) are used to prepare for SAT. SAT Subject Test, can be taken on the same day as the SAT, there are 20 different subject choices to choice from, for example Language. College candidates use this to increase their potential of admittance to certain colleges. Some colleges also require it. The ACT (American College Testing) is also an admission test, some students take both because The ACT® test assesses high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work.

Summary : 

Summary Ultimately, the SAT is an assessment that is used to determine how well a student may do once they begin college. Certain universities have higher standards, in which students need to perform better in order to be admitted. Though the SAT can cause much anxiety to students who realize it holds a lot of weight toward their admittance to a certain university, other factors are also taken into account such as taking the ACT in conjunction, GPA, and other admission requirements (i.e. personal mission statement). It is important for students to practice and possibly take the PSAT, which counselors should stress, in order for them to have a feel for what the SAT will be like in their future.
