Opportunity & Idea Stage Activities... Innovation Portfolio Exploitation Gate Implementation Gate Launch Gate Development Gate Concept Filter Idea Filter Collect & analyse information Internal and external information about products, processes, markets, technologies, etc are collected and analysed in order to identify problems, needs or gaps. Identify and define the idea(s) or opportunity( ies ) Ideas are collected and/or generated though various techniques (e.g. brainstorming) to address identified gaps, needs, or problems, and the potential benefits of the ideas are described Opportunity & Idea Stage Concept Stage Feasibility Stage Development Stage Implementation/ Commercialisation Stage Exploitation Stage

PowerPoint Presentation:

Idea filter... Innovation Portfolio Exploitation Gate Implementation Gate Launch Gate Development Gate Concept Filter Evaluate & select ideas Ideas are evaluated (using various techniques) and selected by relevant decision makers. The most promising ideas will be developed further in the next stage (concept stage). All ideas are captured and stored (for possible future use). Idea Filter Opportunity & Idea Stage Concept Stage Feasibility Stage Development Stage Implementation/ Commercialisation Stage Exploitation Stage

PowerPoint Presentation:

Concept stage activities... Innovation Portfolio Exploitation Gate Implementation Gate Launch Gate Development Gate Concept Filter Idea Filter Expand idea into broader concept 1. Link ideas with opportunities 2. Possibly link different ideas. 3. Describe the business model concept and its potential impact on client satisfaction, revenues and/or cost (not detailed figures, but rough order of magnitude estimates). 4. Describe the potential impact on the business or enterprise. 5. Describe the knowns , unknowns and assumptions. 6. Share the concept with other people to obtain their views and inputs. 7. Develop a plan for determining concept feasibility. Opportunity & Idea Stage Concept Stage Feasibility Stage Development Stage Implementation/ Commercialisation Stage Exploitation Stage

PowerPoint Presentation:

Concept filter... Innovation Portfolio Exploitation Gate Implementation Gate Launch Gate Development Gate Concept Filter Evaluate & select concepts Developed concepts are evaluated (using various techniques, e.g. six thinking hats) and selected by relevant decision makers. The most promising concepts will go to the next stage (feasibility stage) where the technical and market feasibility will be established . More resources (people, time, and money) could be allocated for the feasibility stage. All concepts are captured and stored (for possible future use). Idea Filter Opportunity & Idea Stage Concept Stage Feasibility Stage Development Stage Implementation/ Commercialisation Stage Exploitation Stage

PowerPoint Presentation:

Feasibility stage activities... Innovation Portfolio Exploitation Gate Implementation Gate Launch Gate Development Gate Concept Filter Idea Filter Test the feasibility of selected concepts The purpose of this step is to determine the feasibility of the concept through prototypes, models, mock-ups and experiments. The following feasibilities should be determined: a) Market feasibility b) Economic/ Financial feasibility c) Technical feasibility Typical activities include: 1. Quickly build prototypes, mock-ups or models 2. Test or experiment with the prototypes, mock-ups or models. 3. Obtain opinions of various stakeholders on the feasibility of the concept 4. Assess the results of the experiments, tests and enquiries, and document the learnings . 5. Document the potential benefits, risks, and assumptions – develop the business case Opportunity & Idea Stage Concept Stage Feasibility Stage Development Stage Implementation/ Commercialisation Stage Exploitation Stage

PowerPoint Presentation:

Development gate... Innovation Portfolio Exploitation Gate Implementation Gate Launch Gate Development Gate Concept Filter Assess the business cases for concepts The business cases of tested concepts are evaluated (using various techniques, e.g. six thinking hats) and selected for further development by relevant decision makers. After this gate approved concepts are added as development projects to the innovation portfolio. Other decisions could be to either re-work and re-test the concept, or to kill it or put it on hold for sometime in the future. PowerPoint Presentation:

The innovation portfolio... Innovation Portfolio Exploitation Gate Implementation Gate Launch Gate Development Gate Concept Filter Approved concepts are added as development projects to the innovation portfolio. In the innovation portfolio, development projects are aligned with the innovation strategy, and the portfolio is balanced based on the levels and types of innovation strategically required. Resources (people, time and money) are also strategically allocated for further developing the selected concepts Idea Filter Opportunity & Idea Stage Concept Stage Feasibility Stage Development Stage Implementation/ Commercialisation Stage Exploitation Stage

PowerPoint Presentation:

The launch gate... Innovation Portfolio Exploitation Gate Implementation Gate Launch Gate Development Gate Concept Filter The launch gate is part of the portfolio management process. Development projects are launched from the innovation portfolio based on specified readiness criteria. This gate is only used to launch projects that were earmarked for later development at the end of the feasibility stage. This gate could be skipped if projects were approved for immediate development at the development gate. Development stage activities... Innovation Portfolio Exploitation Gate Implementation Gate Launch Gate Development Gate Concept Filter Idea Filter Opportunity & Idea Stage Concept Stage Feasibility Stage Development Stage Implementation/ Commercialisation Stage Exploitation Stage Project Planning Project planning involves the selection of the project management approach, the selection of the teams, the documentation of the project scope and deciding on the project timelines, resources, budgets, risks and communication processes. Design and Develop The detailed designs for manufacturing and/or implementation are created. The process is governed through regular design reviews. Designs are tested before production can start. Production facilities are prepared for manufacturing (if applicable)

PowerPoint Presentation:

Implementation gate... Innovation Portfolio Exploitation Gate Implementation Gate Launch Gate Development Gate Concept Filter Idea Filter Opportunity & Idea Stage Concept Stage Feasibility Stage Development Stage Implementation/ Commercialisation Stage Exploitation Stage The final designs are evaluated by appropriate decision makers to determine the final production or implementation readiness. It could also be decided to first do a pilot production and implementation on a limited scale (or in a limited market) and use this pilot in the next stage to further learn and refine the designs.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Implementation/Commercialisation stage... Innovation Portfolio Exploitation Gate Implementation Gate Launch Gate Development Gate Concept Filter Idea Filter Opportunity & Idea Stage Concept Stage Feasibility Stage Development Stage Implementation/ Commercialisation Stage Exploitation Stage The new innovations are implemented by rolling it out to the appropriate internal or external markets. These new innovations are still closely monitored and evaluated for a selected time period in order to further learn and refine as required.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Exploitation gate... Innovation Portfolio Exploitation Gate Implementation Gate Launch Gate Development Gate Concept Filter Idea Filter Opportunity & Idea Stage Concept Stage Feasibility Stage Development Stage Implementation/ Commercialisation Stage Exploitation Stage The new innovations are evaluated to identify further exploitation opportunities, e.g further opportunities for generating more value from the new innovations. These could include: Delivering the same basic product/service to new markets or market segments Exploiting new distribution channels Applying new marketing techniques and communication channels Developing new revenue streams Using different partners Utilisation new enterprise architectures, e.g. spin-off companies, joint ventures or alliances, out-licensing the IP, etc.

PowerPoint Presentation:
