From birth Ability to learn communication Develops through reactions of others on our expressions, verbal or non-verbal Where are you? : Where are you? Are you conscious or unconscious of the way you communicate? Are you competent or incompetent in the way you communicate? Or sometimes this and sometimes that? Do you know … : Do you know … … what type of questions YOU normally ask? … whether YOUR body language is normally consistent with the way YOU talk? … how others interpret YOUR body language? … whether what YOU understand by diarrhoea is the same as what the PATIENT means? … how you can ensure that PATIENT has understood what YOU meant? To become more competent as good communication skills enhance professionalism It is paramount for Health Workers to understand their patients and colleagues well in order to care and cure effectively It is paramount for Health Workers to be well understood by their patients and colleagues in order to care and cure effectively Communication is essential in the provision of health service: : Communication is essential in the provision of health service: It is important in relation building – the first step in caring for patients: a greeting, a smile, a welcoming attitude It helps patient to relax Enhances mutual understanding with patients and between colleagues and reduce misunderstanding and consequent mismanagement Communication is essential – cont. : It builds confidence and enhances cooperation of patients Efficient communication can already be therapeutic in itself Good communication skills assist in building a good image of the profession and the institution one is in Good communication skills and its positive consequences enhance job satisfaction Communication is essential – cont.
