DEFINITION KILPATRICK Project is a “whole hearted, purposeful activity proceeding in a social environment”.

DEFINITION contd ….. An educational method where students working individually or in small groups analyze and develop “real-life” problem or tackle a present day theme within a preset time limit, working independently and with the division of tasks clearly defined.

HISTORY: 

590-1765: The beginnings of project work at architectural schools in Europe. 1765-1880: The project as a regular teaching method and its transplantation to America. 1880-1915: Work on projects in manual training and in general public schools. HISTORY

1915-1965: Redefinition of the project method and its transplantation from America back to Europe. Dr. Kilpatrick [1908]: Elaborated the concept and popularized it worldwide in his book “ PROJECT METHOD ”. HISTORY Contd…

TYPES: 

Dr. Kilpatrick has suggested 4 types Producer type : Project calling for production of some physical materials. E.g. Making a model of isolation unit in the hospital Designing new nurse’s station for better monitoring Consumer type : project in which pupils are getting the experience and are enjoying, engaged in consumer type. TYPES

Problem type : project in which solution to a problem is to be found out. Drill type : an activity once performed is repeated to acquire greater skill. E.g. learning a vocabulary

CRITERIA FOR SELECTING PROJECT Selected topic should have educational value and it should be worthwhile. It should not take over time. It should be challenging in nature. Cost and availability of material should be kept in mind. It should be selected according to the will of the student.

It helps to know the individual differences. It helps the students to think scientifically and logically before starting the project. It provides the growth of individual through activity. It helps student to evaluate and judge his finished work. ADVANTAGES

Group project develops team spirit and co-operation. It establishes a definite, tangible, goal there by assisting the learner by clearly defining what is to be done, what must be known before it can be done, how well it is being done and when it is finished. ADVANTAGES

DISADVANTAGES: 

Misconception of term project. Wrong selection of topic. Overconsumption of time. Costly and non availability of suitable things. Chances of subject matter over lapping . DISADVANTAGES
