Smoking a Briar Tobacco Pipe :

Smoking a Briar Tobacco Pipe An Interactive Power Point By: Joe Napolitan ED 205-02 Quit

Why I Chose This Topic :

Why I Chose This Topic Obviously, this is not exactly the type of topic you would expect to be discussed in a classroom. However, when I first purchased a Briar pipe, I spent ages on the internet trying to figure out the best methods for packing, smoking, and cleaning my pipe. Because of this, I am taking the liberty of throwing everything you could ever need to know about this classic hobby in one convenient Power Point using the knowledge gained from practice, as well as other sources. Please enjoy! Quit

Anatomy of a Briar Pipe :

Anatomy of a Briar Pipe The chamber is where the tobacco is packed The bowl surrounding the chamber is where you hold your pipe when smoking The cake is the usually black insulating lining on the inside of the pipe The bit is the part of the pipe placed inside your mouth when smoking, and is at the tip of the stem which is usually made of something other than the briar wood (usually plastic) Quit

“Breaking in” Your Pipe :

“Breaking in” Your Pipe In order to make your pipe last, you must properly break it in. For the first five smokes, you must do the following: Wet your finger and then run it along the cake on the inside of your pipe to moisten it Only fill your pipe half-way Only smoke your pipe once every 24 hours Store your pipe upright Refer to the linked Video For Beginners for tips. Quit

Packing Your Pipe :

Packing Your Pipe Do this over a table that will catch the tobacco that falls as you pack it. Reach into your tobacco and pinch enough to fill your pipe by merely placing it in. After doing so, press down lightly (“as if you were poking a baby”) with your finger. “Check the draw” by inhaling through the bit, if there is nothing inhibiting air flow, you packed lightly enough. Take another pinch and fill it yet again, but this time when you pack the tobacco down, use a bit more force (I like to say “enough force to bother a pet cat”). Check the draw. Take one more pinch and fill your pipe. This time, press it down hard (use the same amount of pressure you would if you wanted to poke a human hard enough to bother them). Check the draw. Make sure that the chamber is at least 4/5 full, yet no tobacco exceeding the top of the chamber Quit

Lighting Your Pipe :

Lighting Your Pipe DO NOT USE CIGARETTE LIGHTERS! Only use matches or pipe lighters, or else you will burn the rim as cigarette lighters do not direct the flame straight into the chamber. It usually takes 2 or 3 attempts to successfully light a pipe. The first two lights are commonly referred to as “false lights” used to char the tobacco on the top of the chamber. Hold the bit in your mouth and strike a match. Hold the match over the chamber and begin sucking in so that the flame travels down into the pipe. Every so often, remember to open your mouth and exhale so that you don’t accidentally inhale too much smoke. Try to light the tobacco so that the entire top layer is charred Once the top is charred, keep pulling the smoke into your mouth until it goes out, when it does, use your finger to lightly pack the tobacco back down). Continue to light until it burns on its own Quit

Smoking Your Pipe :

Smoking Your Pipe Do not inhale the smoke, merely “suck” it into your mouth and push it out. Pipe smoke is very harsh and will irritate your throat, as well as harm your lungs. Hold your pipe with your thumb above the shank with your index finger around the bowl and your middle finger around the heel. If your pipe begins to produce less smoke or go out, a trick I recommend is placing your thumb partially over the chamber, and then sucking in, relighting the tobacco inside. When your pipe makes a gurgling sound, or is hot to the touch, stop smoking the pipe to prevent damaging it. Use a paperclip or a pipe tool to empty the tobacco from the pipe. Make a smoke ring by forming an “O” with your mouth, holding your tongue down, and lightly pushing out a small amount of smoke out with your throat. Allow the pipe to stick primarily sideways out your mouth, rather than directly forward (like a cigarette smoker). Quit

Cleaning Your Pipe :

Cleaning Your Pipe You will notice that after your pipe is hot or gurgling and you begin to remove tobacco that there will be some tobacco near the bottom of the pipe that is only half burned. This is called the “wet heel,” and is not to be smoked. Instead, remove it so that your next bowl will not taste harsh. Once all the tobacco has been removed from the pipe using a paperclip (be careful not to scratch off the cake) or a pipe tool, blow into the stem to remove all the residual tobacco from the stem. Use the length of the paperclip (not the tip!) or your pipe tool to scrape charred tobacco the inside of the cake, being careful not to scrape the cake lining out. Firmly rub your finger, a pipe cleaner, or a dry, soft cloth on the inside of the chamber to finish cleaning the bowl. Use your everyday pipe cleaner (the kind you used in art projects as a kid) to clean the inside of the stem and the cake. A pipe tool Pipe cleaners Quit

Healthy Pipe Smoking :

Healthy Pipe Smoking Be conscious of those around you. Smoke is dangerous, especially to pregnant women. Only smoke when those around you are ok with you doing so. Do not inhale the smoke. This will damage the cilia lining your lungs, hindering mucus production and causing tar to build up. This can give you lung cancer. Do not smoke more than 3 times a day. The smoke created by pipe smoking is usually hotter than that of cigarettes, cigars, and hookah, which can damage the tissues in your mouth. Never smoke when you have mouth sores, cuts, or ulcers in your mouth. If you recently had a tooth pulled, wait at least a week after your operation before smoking a pipe. If you have stitches in your mouth, wait for them to fall out. Avoid keeping your pipe in one position about your mouth while smoking. Over-exposing the pipe to one area of your lip can increase the chances of getting lip cancer. Hold you pipe with your hand, rather than your tongue, teeth, or the roof of your mouth to avoid getting cancer in those areas. Brush your teeth. Mucous producing cilia lining the lungs that can be destroyed by pipe smoke Quit
