Metropolitan Nashville Public SchoolsHume-Fogg Academic High School Athletics, Fitness and Wellness Program Needs

What is Hume-Fogg? :

What is Hume-Fogg? A public academic magnet school located in the heart of downtown Nashville Approximately 860 students from diverse cultural, economic and ethnic backgrounds Students represent all of the 45 zip codes in the Metro Nashville area All academic courses are honors or Advanced Placement

Limited Resources :

Limited Resources Much of the current focus of the Metro Nashville school board is on how to raise the scores of students struggling in the system As 99% of Hume-Fogg graduates go on to attend college programs, the needs of this school do not rank very high in the current funding environment

Athletics :

Athletics With the exception of football, Hume-Fogg fields every TSSAA sport including hockey, swimming, rugby, soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, etc. 429 of the 836 students participate in a TSSAA sport (that is 51%; one of the highest percentages of any Tennessee high school) Other students also participate in “club sports” outside of the TSSAA

Little Revenue from Athletics :

Little Revenue from Athletics Sports in Metro schools are “self funding”. Football is the largest revenue generating sport for high schools; without this revenue there are very little funds available for athletics and fitness at Hume-Fogg.

Facilities :

Facilities Hume-Fogg has no outside athletic facilities such as a track or a field. Hume-Fogg has no gymnasium for hosting any sporting events. The current fitness room is in dismal condition; no ventilation, inadequate lighting, no water fountains, and no phone or intercom for emergencies. The little equipment on site is very old, rusted, and not safe.

Why help? :

Why help? Hume-Fogg’s motivated students are to be commended on all they accomplish in spite of limited funding for the resources they need. These students are some of the bright spots in our public education system and many become active adults in the Nashville community. Providing the opportunity for fitness training and wellness would be a great gift to these children’s lives!
