Introduction : 

Introduction In this lesson you are going to identify and produce the irregular forms for common simple past tense verbs.

Slide 3: 

Examples: John and his friends ate at the new pizza place last night. I spoke to my teacher about my test. He put the bottle on the kitchen counter. The ladies went to the meeting. Tina and I had a good time at the reunion.

The simple past tense = actions or events at a specific time in the past.

Review: Regular Simple Past Tense Verbs : 

Review: Regular Simple Past Tense Verbs Remember! Start with the base form of the verb. Base Form = the infinitive without the preposition to.

For example: Infinitives always include to as in: “to work”

To form the base form, eliminate the preposition “to”

work = the base form of the verb Put “ed” at the end of the base form. work + ed = worked (simple past)

Using irregular past tense verbs. Can you write groups of sentences using the irregular past tense?  Use at least 3 irregular verbs from the list in each sentence.

irregular verbs in the simple past tense are very different. No special rules exist to form the past tense for irregular verbs. It is necessary to memorize these verbs. Incorrect:  Bob taked the kids to school yesterday. Correct: Bob took the kids to school yesterday.
