The “Black Death” name was given to these dieses because the late stage of disease would blacken the skin. People died so swiftly and in such high numbers that, burial pits were dug, filled to overflowing and abandoned. Bodies (sometimes still living) were shut up in the houses which were then burned to the ground. It is estimated to have killed 30% to 60% of Europe’s population.
