Basic Information : 

Basic Information Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock that was originally a shale sedimentary rock mostly made up of clay or volcanic ash. The slate that we usually see is most of the times gray. But, slate can also come in many other colors, even in just one region.

How is Slate Used? : 

How is Slate Used? Slate can be used in many different ways. Slate can be used as roofing slates. Slate can be split in two different ways, which makes it possible to split in thin sheets. Also, slate can be used as whetstones to sharpen knives. Finally, slate has been used in science labs as the bench tops for its thermal stability.

How It’s Formed : 

How It’s Formed Slate is actually a piece of shale that had not that much pressure and low heat on it for a while. The main place for slate to form at is in the mountains. The picture to the right is a picture of shale rock layered with pressure forming slate rock.

Composition : 

Composition Quartz, Muscovite, Illite, Chlorite, Biotite, Hematite, and Pyrite.
