Start with the Call Numbers:

Start with the Call Numbers By searching for butterfly in the Online Catalog , we’ve chosen two books and written down their call numbers. Some books are marked “Harsh”, because they were donated by former FHSU Professor Donna Harsh. Others are marked J for Juvenile. At one time these were two separate collections, but now, the children’s books are all shelved together, so H or Harsh, and J all mean the book is shelved in the Children’s Collection. Write down the whole call #!

Understanding a Dewey Decimal System Call Number:

Understanding a Dewey Decimal System Call Number “M182” stands for the author’s last name . “v” is the first letter of the book’s title 2007 is the publication year Harsh Room-Juvenile-Basement is the place in the library where the book is shelved. The “E” stands for Easy Readers, or Picture Books .

The call number of our first book starts with E, which means it is shelved in the Easy Reader section:

The call number of our first book starts with E , which means it is shelved in the E asy Reader section This IS an easy read ! Harsh E /J E Harsh E/ J E A111a to J66w

Easy Readers are shelved on the first two rows of wooden shelves:

Harsh E/JE A111a to J66w Harsh E/JE J6613h to T367l Easy Readers are shelved on the first two rows of wooden shelves Call numbers start at the front and go around the end of the shelf, and continue on the other side

Now look at the second part of the call number: M182v:

Now look at the second part of the call number: M182v Harsh E/JE A111a to J66w Harsh E/JE J6613 to T367l M comes between J and T, so we know our book is on the left side of this shelf Call numbers A through J66w are on the right side of this shelf J6613 through T 367l are on the left side

Once we’ve found the M section, we need to find M182v by looking at the labels on the shelves.:

Our 2nd book’s call number begins with a number instead of a letter:

Our 2 nd book’s call number begins with a number instead of a letter Since this is not an Easy Reader, it has a slightly different type of call number: 595.789 stands for the topic of Butterflies P957 stands for the author’s name E is the first letter of the book’s title (articles are ignored) 1997 is the publication year To find out more about the Dewey Decimal System, click the Finding Books tab of the Children’s Collection Research Guide.

The call numbers beginning with numbers are shelved right after the Easy Readers, starting with 00:

We need to find 595.789 HARSH/J HARSH/J 591.374 to 811 F699w A182a It would fall in this range

We look at the shelf labels again, following numerical order:

It might be easier to find the correct number if you imagine a zero at the end:

It might be easier to find the correct number if you imagine a zero at the end Scaly Wings By Ross Hutchins J 595.781 H974 s 1971 The Butterfly in the Garden By Paul & Mary Whalley J 595.78 W552b 1986 Harsh Monarch Butterfly By Gail Gibbons 595.789 1989 G441m So, 595.78(0) would come before 595.781, then 595.789 Remember that “J” and “Harsh” mean the same thing: Children’s Collection

Once we’ve found 595.789, we need to look alphabetically for “P”:
