HISTORY : HISTORY DTH services were first proposed in 1996 in India. But were rejected due to issues of national security and cultural invasion. Finally in 2000, DTH was allowed. The new policy requires all operators to set up earth stations in India. How does DTH work? : How does DTH work? DTH network consists of a broadcasting centre, satellites, encoders, multiplexers, modulators and DTH receivers. MECHANISM OF DTH : MECHANISM OF DTH DTH - The Technology : DTH - The Technology • Analog TV is converted to Digital • Compression (lossless) used to minimize bit rate • Encryption techniques used to control access to a channel • Each channel data stream is modulated • Multiple channels are combined and up-linked to a satellite transponder RECEIVING SIDE : RECEIVING SIDE Antenna LNB Receiver DTH ANTENNA : DTH ANTENNA The DTH antennas have a narrow beam width, which means exact pointing within three degrees is critical. There are two settings required for aiming a round (18") antenna, and three settings required for using an elliptical (18" x 24") antenna: 18" Round Antenna requires: Elevation (up/down angle) Azimuth (side-to-side angle) 18" x 24" Elliptical Antenna requires: Elevation (up/down angle) Azimuth (side-to-side angle) Tilt (circular rotation) When the antenna is properly pointed, the dish "catches" the signal and reflects it to the LNB . Slide 9: 60 Cm. receive dish - wall mounted DTH LNB : DTH LNB The LNB is the component which sits out in front of the antenna on the LNB arm. It is a signal converter. which converts the signals from the satellite on the dish. Components At Receiver End : Components At Receiver End • 60-120 cm. Dish Antenna. • IRD (Integrated Receiver/Decoder) / Set Top Box - to convert digital TV signal to be fed to TV receiver. • Smart Card – to descramble signal DTH RECEIVER : DTH RECEIVER The receiver is connected to the LNB via Coaxial cable. For proper operation, the receiver should have a valid access card . DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DTH & CABLE TV : DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DTH & CABLE TV In DTH, TV channels would be transmitted from the satellite to a small dish antenna located at the subscriber's home. The broadcaster directly connects to the user. DTH can also reach the remotest of areas. DTH signals directly come from the satellite to your DTH dish. Will DTH be cheaper than cable or more expensive? : Will DTH be cheaper than cable or more expensive? DTH is definitely less expensive than cable for long term usage. If CAS made set-top box mandatory for households, the costs between DTH and cable would not have been too wide. But CAS on the backburner now -- which means no set-top box (a must for DTH), the price gap between DTH and cable will be wide. Is DTH superior to cable TV? : Is DTH superior to cable TV? Offers better quality picture as it is digital mode of transmission. DTH offers stereophonic sound effects. It can also reach remote areas where terrestrial transmission and cable TV have failed to penetrate. Apart from enhanced picture quality, DTH has also allows for interactive TV services such as movie-on-demand, Internet access, video conferencing and e-mail.
