Slide3: My balancing act Slide4: First, the idealism…….Philosophy part A: Philosophy part A Rather than restrict freedom, the structure of a classroom nourishes freedom of thought and expression by encouraging an environment that is non-judgmental and non-threatening both physically and emotionally. Rather than impose limits, the structure of a classroom encourages students to supersede them. In order for this environment to exist, each member of the classroom exhibits respect, honesty, and responsibility. Philosophy part B : Philosophy part B The classroom environment provides the necessary support for student self-determination leading to discovery of intrinsically motivated activities as well as internalized extrinsic motivation of other activities. The structure of the classroom provides for student needs in the areas of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. In a + learning environment: In a + learning environment the student is in control of his or her own learning, and is aware that (s)he takes responsibility for it. The student is aware that the teacher is available to help in his or her endeavor to grow as an individual, intellectually, academically, and otherwise; the teacher can help him or her to accomplish his or her own goals. Based on this responsibility, the student also exhibits respect and honesty. The student feels autonomous, competent, and related toOn consequences…: On consequences… Consequences exist to prevent one (or more) student’s actions from interfering with the learning of other students. They are not punishments, but, rather, represent an efficient approach to handling disruptions. Rewards: Rewards No reward system- Students are responsible for their own learning. We will work as a class to support each other’s learning, and we will recognize each other’s growth Students will receive praise from the teacher and from each other (letters)Slide10: The realism….Slide11: Before I can inspire motivation, the classroom has to be structured and secure enough that my students will want to participate in activities, quiet enough that they can really listen to what I’m saying. An Effective Classroom Has : An Effective Classroom Has Carefully Structured Procedures Clearly Defined Expectations Consistently Enforced Consequences Very specific instructions Carefully planned activities Well-coordinated activities Timed activities No down time Slide13: What hasn’t changed (much)…. Expectations : Expectations 1) Responsibility 2) Honesty 3) Respect Consequences: Consequences 1) Warning 2) Detention (writing assignment banned) 3) Referral and call homeOf course…: Of course… Severity clause: The teacher can send the student out at any timeSlide17: Some Procedures Entering the classroom: Entering the classroom 1) The student will enter the classroom respectfully and quietly 2) The student will begin the do-now is his or her “do-now” section 3) You are late if your butt is not in your seat when the bell ringsGoing the bathroom: Going the bathroom 1) Students may go the bathroom between classes. 2) Students have two emergency bathroom passes per semester. 3) Each unused pass may be traded in for 10 points Using a bathroom pass: Using a bathroom pass To use an emergency bathroom pass, a student must raise a hand containing the pass If it is an appropriate time, the teacher will nod and the student may go The student will exist the room respectfully…by walking behind all of the other desks and without interrupting another student Lost passes will not be replaced Sharpening Pencils: Sharpening Pencils The student may not sharpen pencils during my class Pencils may be borrowed from the teacher for points off participationCollecting missed work: Collecting missed work The student is responsible for collecting missed work from the teacher, and making up tests outside of class time The student is expected to get notes from another student. The student is expected to approach the teacher to ask questions about this material. Submitting a concern: Submitting a concern After class, please…or write me a note and have a classmate give it to me if you want it to be anonymousDismissal: Dismissal Class is dismissed when……..?Parental Involvement: Parental Involvement Parents will receive phone calls from the teacher-both + and -. The teacher will be available for parent-teacher conferences The parent will sign the syllabus at the beginning of the class. The syllabus will explain requirements and indicate that the student will be bringing home information about exams and projects.
