Classroom Management Plan: Classroom Management Plan Michael Gallagher Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry, and Geometry Algebra I and Algebra II Greenville-Weston High School 2006-2007

Classroom Management:A Definition: Classroom Management: A Definition Classroom management is a system of procedures, rules, and consequences designed to foster the best possible learning environment for students.

Classroom Management:A Philosophy: Classroom Management: A Philosophy The goal of classroom management is learning, and so the teacher will strive to order his or her classroom in a manner that is most productive to that end, allowing all students to learn to their fullest potential.

A Positive Learning Environment: A Positive Learning Environment A positive learning environment is: Safe. Students feel safe coming to class and expressing their ideas. Supportive. Students feel that they and their ideas are worthwhile and special. Exciting. Students feel that the subjects being taught are intellectually interesting and relevant to their lives. Quiet. If no one can hear the instructions, no one can learn.

Procedures: Procedures

If you need to…: If you need to… Ask a question: Raise your hand. Make a comment: Raise your hand. Sharpen your pencil: Raise your pencil. Go to the nurse, counselor, etc: Write yourself a pass, then raise your pass. Go to the bathroom: Raise your bathroom pass. Simple Version – Raise your hand before speaking.

Testing: Testing All work and answers will be written neatly on a separate sheet of paper. Circle your answers. Show and label all work. Any unlabeled work or work written on the test or quiz is unacceptable and will not be graded. It’s so much easier to grade when on the test itself that I gave this up almost instantly

DoNow: DoNow When you come into class, there will be one or more questions on the board. Open your binder and begin the questions in the section titled DoNow. DoNow problems will be collected and graded like homework.

Benchmark: Benchmark Instead of DoNow, Warmup, etc. Start every class with a 15-20 minute quiz Absolutely no talking during the benchmark.

Homework: Homework Students will label their homework with their names, class, and date. Students will keep all homework in the appropriate section in their binders. On Friday, Mr. Gallagher will roll a die to choose what he will grade.

Homework: Homework New Plan Assign two problem sets each week Collect PS’s Wednesday and Friday

Outside Class: Outside Class If the class has been exceptionally well-behaved, a portion of class may be held outside on a Friday. When we go outside, I will designate one student to carry the small whiteboards, and another to carry the markers and erasers. When outside, we will remain focused on math. I we cannot do this, we will return inside immediately.

If You Are Absent:Be Responsible: If You Are Absent: Be Responsible It is your responsibility to get the homework assignment and DoNow problems from a classmate. It is your responsibility to ask Mr. Gallagher for any handouts you may have missed. If you missed a test or quiz, it is your responsibility to schedule a time to make it up, either before or after school or during my planning period, when I will also check your homework and choose which to grade.

Everyone is absent… All the time: Everyone is absent… All the time Martini missed almost 2 weeks of school because his brother got run over and his house burned down. I had no realistic way of dealing with absences.

While you were out…: While you were out… The solution Better Organization Put things in files, not piles. Every student will have his own folders, which will contain everything. When a student is absent, assignments will still go into his folder.

Parental Involvement: Parental Involvement Call all parents during the first two weeks of school – I actually called almost all the parents during this time. I need to call the rest of them. Invite parents to class on days when students are giving presentations on projects
