Ms. Floyd'sClassroom Management Plan :What I thought it would be…
(black)
vs.
What it actually was…
(pink) Ms. Floyd'sClassroom Management Plan
Classroom Management: :Classroom Management: DEFINITION: A teacher’s ability to effectively control/manage his/her classroom so that the most optimal learning environment is achieved.
This is made possible through:
consistent and effective discipline.
An appropriate and respectful relationship with the students.
well planned and engaging lessons.
Thus, you must have clear and detailed rules, consequences, rewards, and procedures.
Classroom Management: :Classroom Management: I still agree with my definition, but I would emphasis the importance of
ENGAGING LESSIONS/ACTIVITIES
RAPPORT WITH STUDENTS
over effective and consistent discipline because the latter only exists in theory.
My Philosophy: :My Philosophy: Teachers are responsible for molding the minds of the youth! BUT…in order to do this there must be a positive and conducive learning environment!! Thus, it is my responsibility to be both a disciplinarian AND an effective teacher.
Discipline may be foreign to my students, but it is my job to enforce this concept in my classroom. Therefore, I must establish a mutual trusting and respectful relationship with my students in the hope that they will listen to what I say and respect me as the authority figure.
MY PHILOSOPHY IS: “Respect is earned” and your students must respect you in order for you to be an authority figure and enforce discipline in your classroom.
My Philosophy: :My Philosophy: What I have learned:
It is possible to have a positive learning environment without be viewed as a “disciplinarian.”
Discipline is indeed foreign to a lot of students and you will be doing a lot of hoping/praying!!
I still stick by: “Respect is earned” and your students must respect you in order for you to be an authority figure and enforce discipline in your classroom.
A Positive Learning Environment: :A Positive Learning Environment: Orderly and controlled environment, which is essentially achieved through good classroom management.
Effective and knowledgeable instructor.
Comfortable environment.
Varity of methods incorporating the various learning styles I still agree!!
My Rules: :My Rules: Be prepared for class every single day! This means have binder, pencil, and paper everyday!
Be on time, accountable, and ready to learn!
Raise your hand when I am talking!
Raise your hand to leave your seat!
BE THE BEST!!
“Rules are made to be broken” :“Rules are made to be broken” I really didn’t have rules. I cannot even remember what mine turned out to be, but I would NOT suggest this!!
Suggestions:
I am totally against “raise your hand” policies.
I allow students to eat/drink in class.
You have to pick your battles and these two things don’t seem to be worth the headache of enforcing. Additionally, in my opinion, they stifle the classroom.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, REMEMBER THAT RULES ARE MADE TO BE BROKEN, SO YOU BETTER BE READY TO HAND OUT A LOT OF CONSEQUENCES IF YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A LOT OF RULES!!
My Consequences: :My Consequences: Warning
Random Activity of my Choosing
Writing assignment, hallway, pushups, timeout, etc.
Detention and Parental Notification
Referral
Class Punishment = marbles taken away
**Note that I have the right to skip certain consequences based on the severity of the offense!!
Consequences? What are those? :Consequences? What are those? Once again, I deviated from the traditional MTC classroom management plan. I did not really have consequences; but I have to admit that my room probably would have run even smoother had I enforced rules and consequences.
Things to consider:
Detention may/may not be allowed at your school.
You lose clout with administration when you write too many referrals.
Corporal punishment is NOT allowed in some districts.
Writing should NEVER be a punishment!!
Suggestions: timeout/invisible chair; get friendly w/ the coaches.
My Rewards :My Rewards Verbal Praise
Tickets
Positive phone call/letter home
Full Marble Jar = Class Reward
Rewards = The backbone of my CM :Rewards = The backbone of my CM Positive reinforcement goes much further than negative consequences!!
Always tell a student when he/she is doing well.
Tickets worked wonders for me!!
I wrote two letters home and called one parent.
I live by the MARBLE JAR!!
Competition is key!!
Ms. Floyd’s Procedures: :Ms. Floyd’s Procedures: Homework policy
2 bathroom passes/semester
Absentee folder
Suggestions box
Parental involvement Students don’t do HW!! I excepted late work.
I tried signing in/out. Didn’t work. I ended up just letting students go to the bathroom whenever they needed to.
Never got around to having an absentee folder.
They never used the suggestions/? box.
I pretty much avoided parental contact.
Conclusions: :Conclusions: Gone are the days where teachers are automatically respected by students. You have to EARN their trust and respect.
Students do not respond well to hostility. There is a way to have a strong presence without being “mean”.
Building a positive rapport with your students will make your life a lot easier.
A bored/unchallenged student is a recipe for disaster.
Your kids need to think that you are at least a little crazy.
Remember that your students come from a different world than you. They will not act the way that you think they should. That is not to say that you should merely accept their behavior; just be conscious of this fact and respectfully SHOW them how you would like for them to act. Remember to be culturally sensitive!!
