Geography Surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea, the Aegean Sea, and the Sea of Marmara, Turkey is located between Asia and the Middle East.

How does Turkey’s political and physical geography affect the country? Turkey’s physical and political geography help them be an important player in Europe and Middle East relationships. Turks keep themselves at a distance. They don’t consider themselves Arabs or Islamic

Turkish History : 

Turkish History War of Independence (1919-1923) The Treaty of Lausanne (July 24th, 1923) gave the Turks their most modern boundaries. They defeated the Greeks, the Eastern Armenian states, the British, French, and the Georgians. Single-party Period (1923-1946) Began with the foundation of their republic on October 29th, 1923. Steady process lasted for 10 years. The Turks signed a peace treaty with Germany during WWII. Multi-party Period (1946-Present) Began with the Democratic Party. After the prime minister was executed, control went back to the civilians.

The Turkish Economy Turkey’s industries consist of paper, construction lumber, textiles, mining, and steel. IPA helps out Turkey with their financial problems They help out under provisions of financial instruments

Turkey’s Government : 

Beliefs, Ideology, Governance Turkey’s Government Turkey has a republican parliamentary republic. Their executive branches consist of chief of state, head of government, cabinet. While their judicial branches are Constitutional Court, High Court of Appeals, Council of State, Court of Accounts, Military High Court of Appeals, and Military High Administrative Court.

Turkey’s Beliefs : 

Beliefs, Ideology, Governance Turkey’s Beliefs Turkey is a large secular country. There is no official religion in Turkey. Most Turks are Muslim. They go through many things before they pray. They wash their hands, faces, and feet.

Important Turkish People : 

Important Turkish People Turkey’s President is Abdullah Gul. He believes strongly in secularist oppositions. He is the first Islamic president since Turkey became a Republic. Recep Tayyip Erdogan became Turkey’s prime minister in 2003. He created the moderate Justice and Development Party in 2001.

Turkey’s Relationship with the U.S. : 

Turkey’s Relationship with the U.S. Turkey’s relationship with the U.S. began in 1947. The U.S. Congress indicated Turkey as the recipient of a economical and military assistance that was to help Turkey resist Soviet Union’s threats. In 1979 the Turks broke a U.S. and International Law by having an intervention with the Cyprus military. In response to this the U.S. stopped supplying Turkey with arms. In the 1980’s the U.S.-Turkish relationship recovered.

Turkey’s Relationship with the Middle East Turkey’s geographical location helps out Europe and Asian trade Turkey’s relationship with Egypt is tied closely by religion and history. They both share a free trade Turkey and Iran share a peaceful relationship After the Iranian Revolution Turkey and Iran were in constant conflict. Today they both fight for anti-terrorism and drug trafficking and helping out Central Asia and Iraq. Iraq’s and Turkey’s relationship is rocky because of the Turkish-Kurdish Conflict

Turkey’s Relationship with the Middle East cont… Turkey was considered a close ally of Israel. Turkey’s relationship with Lebanon was a quiet and cold one Turkey and Israel are close but Israel and Lebanon aren’t

Kurdish-Turkish Conflict : 

Kurdish-Turkish Conflict The Kurds are located in Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Iran. They want a country to call their own. Abdullah Ocalan was the leader of the PKK (Kurdistan Working Party) The PKK worked hard to gain their territory but Turkey, Syria, Iran, and Iraq put up a good fight. The Kurds have been resisting Turkish government since the 1930’s.
