Premium member Presentation Transcript Israel : Israel By: Kody Hinds Geography : Geography Israel’s neighbors are Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, and Egypt to the southwest. The sovereign territory of Israel is approximately 20,770 square kilometers South of Israel is the Negev desert. The Galilee and Carmel mountain ranges are in the north. 70% of the population lives on the Indian Coastal Plain More Geography : More Geography Due to its close proximity to Palestine, and the fact that it was not entirely an Arab nation, Israel and it’s neighbors never got along very well. Egypt would refuse to recognize it’s right to exist, and called for the destruction of Israel. Israel recently tried peace treaties with Syria, but it fell apart when they entered a conflict with a Palestinian group known as Hamas Demographics : Demographics Israel's population is currently 7.5 million people. Hebrew is the dominant language of the country, spoken by the majority of the citizens, but the 20% of Arab’s that make up the population continue to speak Arabic. The Russian Immigration increased Israel’s population by 12% While the majority of the population is Jewish, 55% say they are "traditional," while 20% consider themselves secular Jews, 17% define themselves as Religious Zionists; the final 8% define themselves as Haredi Jews. Economics : Economics Israel is a rising force in the area of technology. It has the second largest number of startup companies in the world Also has the largest number of NASDAQ companies outside of North America They contain limited natural resources, but development over time has made them self sufficient in food production More Economics : More Economics In 2009, Israel had the 49th highest GDP, at $206.4 Billion Intel and Microsoft built their first overseas research and development centers in Israel. Israel also receives a lot of tourism. Received over 3 million tourists in 2008 Israel is also a global leader in water conservation and geothermal energy. Served as the 8th Prime Minister of Israel for two terms Won the 1994 Nobel Peace prize along with Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin for peace talks he participated in as the Israeli foreign minister. His predecessor was Moshe Katsav, who had a lot of controversy during his career involving rape and sexual harrasment Shimon’s long political career is considered one of Israel’s finest. First President : First President Israel’s first president was Chaim Weizmann, who took office on February 1, 1949 He served for three years until his death in 1952 He was a Zionist leader and also a chemist. Founded the Democratic Zionist Party in 1902 Presidential Similarities : Presidential Similarities All of Israel’s past presidents were of a Judaist faith. More than half of the former presidents were immigrants, mostly from Russia and Poland. They all served Irregular terms, mostly 7 years, but many shorter and a few longer History : History Israel was originally around between 1400 and 1100 B.C. separated by a southern Kingdom of Judah and a Northern kingdom of Israel The Kingdom of Israel was destroyed by an Assyrian king around 720 B.C. and it’s people were sent into exile. A revolt was led in 174 B.C. and lasted 30 years, leading to a restoration of Jewish rule. More History : More History Jews were again dispersed from Israel by the Romans in 64 B.C. After several changes of rulers, from Arabs to Roman Catholics to Ottoman, the Zionist revolution began. The British conquered and created two states in the Middle East in 1917, Palestine and Mesopotamia Some More History : Some More History After the creation of these states, Jewish immigration rose steadily Arab’s began rioting, and in order to ensure the stability of the economy, the British enacted an immigration quota on the Jews With increased riots caused by Arab’s, the Jewish people began forming militia’s to go along with the Revisionist Zionist party The Arab’s launched a massive rebellion from 1936-1939 in Palestine So Much History.. : So Much History.. In 1939 the British tightened the quota with an act known as the white letter, and Jewish migration was limited to only 75,000 Jew’s over a period of 5 years. After World War II, Jewish people began migrating heavily into Palestine, against this new British law. The Jewish militia’s combined and formed a Jewish Resistance Movement against the British After continued fighting between the British and the Jewish, the problem was turned over to the United Nations Just When You Thought it Was Over : Just When You Thought it Was Over In September 1947, the UNSCOP (United Nations Special Committee on Palestine) suggested partition in Palestine to create two states, one Arab and one Jewish. The Arabs stated that they would greet any attempt to create a Jewish state with war. After the last British forces left on May 14, 1948, the state of Israel was declared, and the Arab’s began their invasion. Bam. History. : Bam. History. After more than 40 years of fighting with the Arabs, Israel finally began initiating peace talks with some of the major countries. After several massacres and wars, Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty on March 26, 1979. Even today, peace talks with the other countries and organizations are going on, but attacks and wars involving Israel have ceased to stop. The U.S. and the Future : The U.S. and the Future Israel has received major funding from the U.S. ever since it was declared as a country. Other nations have been modest at best with helping Israel, and all of Israel's neighbors were against it in the beginning, and some still are. This situation is hoped to be resolved peacefully in the future, and Israel hopes to enjoy life as a country without wars or threats.
