Science Fair Project :Science Fair Project Problem Statement: Does the wingspan of a paper airplane have an effect on how far the airplane can fly? By: Tavish Boyle Grade: 6 Teacher: Ms. Wage School: St. Rose of Lima

Acknowledgements :Acknowledgements I would love to thank my mom my dad and my siblings for everything they’ve done from having paper airplanes zip around the house to me asking them their opinion on things. I would also like to thank my teacher Ms. Wage she helped me a lot and she also approved my topic and said it would be very interesting and fun to do since I am into flying and aviation she helped me a lot. Thanks

Abstract :Abstract The problem Statement is: Does the length of a airplanes wings have an effect on how far it can fly/glide? I think that the airplane with the larger wingspan will fly farther because there is a larger surface under the wings to create more lift therefore the airplane will fly farther. The way I will test this is by making several paper airplanes all the same type except cut the wings to different lengths and see what happens when I fly them. I will launch them all equally with a launching contraption that I made that launches them all equally.

Abstract :Abstract My results after flying the planes were that the airplane with the larger wingspan does fly farther because of more surface area for the wing to create lift and more room to create more lift is more time spent in the air and farther flights and that’s what I was trying to achieve and find out and my hypothesis was right.

Research :Research I found out that it is not just the length of the wing that effects how far it flies there is also the weight of paper and aerodynamics but if you use the same type of plane but different length of wingspan this will effect the flight I found out that larger wings equal longer time in the air and this makes complete sense because think of a glider its wings are very large also and a glider can stay in the air for hours so larger wingspan is the way to go if you want to stay in the air longer and go farther.

Hypothesis :Hypothesis What I think will happen is that the airplane with the larger wingspan will go farther because of the greater wingspan and a larger wingspan creates more lift. I think this will happen because if there is a larger wingspan there is more lift created by a larger wing.

Materials and Procedure :Materials and Procedure What I will use is a rectangular piece of computer paper, scissors, a hanger, rubber band, tape measure, a paper clip, tape. The way I will test my hypothesis is make several airplanes cut the wings down to size and the see how they fly with launching contraption. The Independent variable is- wingspan (changes) The Dependent variable is- type of airplane (doesn’t change)

Results :Results Airplane A- Wingspan=4 in. Run 1. 22ft Run 2. 20ft 6in. Average- 24ft 2in. Run 3. 30ft Airplane B- Wingspan=3in. Run 1. 23ft 6in. Run 2. 21ft 8in. Average- 20ft 3in. Run 3. 15ft 5in. Airplane C- Wingspan=1in. Run 1. 15ft 2in. Run 2. 19ft Average- 15ft 8in. Run 3. 13ft 2in.

Analysis :Analysis I found out that in order to make an airplane fly farther you have to have a larger wingspan. Why? You need a larger wingspan because with a bigger area for the air to get under and lift the plane up means more lift because of the shape and area covered by the wing. I also found out that there are more forces pulling on a airplane than just gravity, like drag, lift, and thrust which also slow the plane down and make it slower but with what I did I eliminated a factor thrust because there was no engine on the plane so that helped a lot.

Conclusion :Conclusion My hypothesis was correct it was supported by the several flights I did and by the research I completed. The reason why my hypothesis is correct is from the trial flights that proved it correct.
