Edit Comment Close Premium member Presentation Transcript The Byzantine Empire : The Byzantine Empire Justinian : Justinian 527 – becomes Emperor Wants to restore Rome’s glory 533 – sends his best general, Belisarius, to recover North Africa from the Germanic tribes – successful Belisarius then seizes Rome from the Ostrogoths For the next 16 years, Rome is attacked numerous times by Germanic tribes and many are successful and seize power for some time Justinian’s Empire : Justinian’s Empire After Justinian’s campaigns, he gains almost all the territory Rome controlled Ruled with absolute power Head of state and church Justinian Code : Justinian Code Justinian set up a panel of legal experts to regulate the empire Panel looked through 400 years of Roman law and found numerous laws to be outdated and contradictory Panel created a single, uniform code known as the Justinian Code Code discusses marriage, slavery, property, inheritance, women’s rights, criminal justice, and more Used for 900 years Justinian Code : Justinian Code Consists of 4 works: The Code – 5,000 Roman laws that were still useful The Digest – quoted and summarized the opinions of Rome’s greatest thinkers about law – 50 volumes The Institutes – textbook that told law students how to use laws The Novellae (New Laws) – presented legislation passed after 534 Building Programs : Building Programs Justinian enlarges his palace Builds baths, aqueducts, law courts, schools, and hospitals Re-fortifies Constantinople Rebuilds Hagia Sophia Fortification : Fortification Justinian has the fortifications of Constantinople rebuilt Workers construct 14-mile stone wall along coastline and rebuild the walls along its western land border Hagia Sophia : Hagia Sophia Means Holy Wisdom in Greek Justinian rebuilds it Hippodrome : Hippodrome Means horse racecourse in Greek Free entertainment consisting of wild chariot races and performance acts Held 60,000 spectators Fans would gather wearing the color of their favorite team Nika Rebellion : Nika Rebellion 532 – two fan groups sparked citywide riots called the Nika Rebellion Nika means victory Angry with government because they believed officials had been too severe in putting down a previous riot of Hippodrome fans Packed Hippodrome and demanded the overthrow of Justinian Belisarius comes in and slaughtered 30,000 rebels Justinian considered fleeing but Theodora, his wife, urged him to stay Empress Theodora : Empress Theodora Most powerful woman in Byzantine history Was an actress Married Justinian Met with foreign envoys, wrote to foreign leaders, passed laws, built Churches After her death in 548, Justinian was so depressed that he passed no major laws for the rest of his reign You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
