Vocabulary
axis :axis an imaginary line running through the center of the earth, around which the earth rotates or spins.

is used to identify the direction of north, east, south and west
cardinal directions
are north, east, south, and west
intermediate directions
are northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest
continent :continent a land mass on earth
elevation :elevation is used on a physical map to indicate how low or high areas on the map are in comparison to sea level

the imaginary line that runs east and west around the middle of the earth. It is the starting point for lines of latitude Prime Meridian
the main line of longitude
hemisphere :hemisphere half the globe. There are four hemispheres: Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western
International date line :International date line the line that sets the time zone for all cities

lines that run north and south around the globe and measures east and west.

 map symbol - is used to identify something on the map such as a building, road, lake, tree, etc. map scale - identifies distances on the map
oceanographic map :oceanographic map shows the depth of oceans and the features of under the water
physical map :physical map shows physical features of the land including valleys, canyons, plains, and mountains
political map :political map shows boundaries of countries and states. Also includes cities and often roads
revolution :revolution the time it takes the earth to go around the sun once
