Phase Diagrams Marissa S. Chemistry July 2011

What is a Phase Diagram?:

What is a Phase Diagram? A phase diagram is a graph of pressure versus temperature that shows the condition under which the phases of a substance can exist. Normal Freezing Point: 100°C Normal Boiling Point: 350°C Triple Point: Temperature: 90°C Pressure: 0.75 atm Critical Point: Temperature: 800°C Pressure: 1.5 atm

Questions:

Questions If you had a quantity of this substance at a pressure of 1.25 atm and a temperature of 300°C, and you lowered the pressure to 0.25 atm , what phase change would occur? Answer: Evaporation

Questions:

Questions If you had a quantity of this substance at a pressure of 0.75 atm and a temperature of -100°C, what phase changes would occur if you increased the temperature to 600°C? At what temperatures would they occur? Solid  Liquid  Gas Melting (100°C) , Evaporation (350°C)
