Settlers were able to move to new areas. After the War …The Frontier: Most colonial settlements were along the Atlantic coast and major rivers. American colonists started moving west to find fresh land to live on. Settled in the backcountry of Virginia and the Carolinas The FrontierPioneers: The first people to move west were called pioneers . Pioneers faced many risks: Attacks from Indians Building homes Finding resources PioneersProblems with Native Americans: British settlers moved onto Native American lands The Natives would not give up their land and did not agree with the results of the war. One Leader Said it Best: “Englishman, although you have conquered the French, you have not conquered us!” Problems with Native AmericansResistance: In the 1760s, several tribes joined together to fight the colonists. Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa tribe led the forces Wanted all Native Americans to give up anything European. Wanted all the Europeans off their land. ResistancePontiac’s Rebellion: Who – Native Americans under Pontiac’s leadership What – attacked British forts on the frontier When – May 1763 Where – the frontier Why – To remove the British Pontiac’s RebellionPontiac’s Rebellion: Seven forts were captured or destroyed When his allies left him, Pontiac surrendered (1766) Pontiac’s RebellionProclamation of 1763: Order issued by King George III The British government did not want to provoke fighting on Native American lands Britain could not afford to spend more money defending colonists. Proclamation of 1763Proclamation of 1763: Banned colonists from settling any land west of the Appalachian Mountains. Ordered colonists in some regions to remove themselves from their new homes. Many colonists disobeyed the Proclamation Showed that they were acting more independently and did not respect the king.
