Premium member Presentation Transcript The Original 13 Colonies: The Original 13 Colonies The Middle ColoniesMiddle Colonies: Middle Colonies New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware Unlike the New England Colonies these colonies were not originally British Owned by the Dutch and SwedesNew York & New Jersey: New York & New Jersey New York and New Jersey were Dutch Colonies New Netherland became New York New Amsterdam became New Jersey The British took control of these Dutch Colonies in late 1600’s after threatening the Dutch The Dutch had few defenses and handed the colonies over to the BritishENGLISH TAKE OVER: ENGLISH TAKE OVER English government recognized problems in New Netherlands and took advantage British warships landed soldiers at New Amsterdam in 1664 and forced Dutch governor to surrender the colonyDIVERSITY AND TOLERATION: DIVERSITY AND TOLERATION Because colony included Dutch settlers, English had to tolerate ethnic and religious differences from the start. Policy of toleration made colony attractive to people from other colonies and from various foreign countries Dutch cabin in New YorkPennsylvania: Pennsylvania Proprietor William Penn Proprietor = Owner of a Colony Penn was trying to find a place for Quakers to live Quakers - Peaceful religious group banned from England and, later, Massachusetts In exchange for canceling the king’s huge debt to him, Penn was given a huge territory in the New WorldPennsylvania : Pennsylvania Penn made a famous treaty of friendship with the Native Americans. Named the capital of his colony Philadelphia Duke of York sold Delaware to Penn Delaware remained a part of Pennsylvania until 1776Crops for Sale: Crops for Sale Good soil and climate.
