An Era of Exploration :An Era of Exploration Objectives - Discuss how conquistadors defeated two Indian empires. Name the areas the Spanish explored. Explain how Spain settled its colonies. Describe what life was like for Native Americans under Spanish rule.


Slide 4:4 2. Spain's Builds and Empire Wanting God, glory, and gold; conquistadors, or conquerors got permission from rulers to establish settlements in exchange for giving Spain 1/5 of gold or treasure captured and eventually made Spain one of the richest nations in Europe at the time.


Conquistador Hernando Cortes :Conquistador Hernando Cortes Cortes eager to win riches and glory left Spain in 1519 with 600 soldiers and 16 horses. Arrived in Mexico searching for gold


Slide 6:6 Conquest of the Aztecs and Incas The Aztec people spotted sailors in ships on the Gulf of Mexico. They reported this to their emperor, Montezuma. Sacred writings predicted white-skinned god would come from the east to rule. The Spanish sailors wanted the Aztec gold. The Spanish led by Cortez defeated the Aztecs and destroyed their city. Montezuma Tenochtitlan


Conquest of the Incas :Conquest of the Incas Francisco Pizzaro conquistador; sailed down Pacific coast of South America w/ 200 soldiers did the same thing and conquered the Incas In 1532 Incan emperor was tricked into capture and sought to buy his freedom with gold. When the loot delivered, the monarch was slain. Without leadership Incan resistance collapsed By 1535 Pizarro controlled much of Incan empire


Slide 8:8 The Spanish conquistadors had better military equipment. Native Americans had never seen horses; were frightened of them Native American fighters held back. Aztecs thought Spaniards might be gods. Incas were just getting over a war. Many Indians died from chicken pox, measles and influenza. Reason for Spanish Victories The Conquistadors won an easy Victory against inferior Inca weapons technology


Slide 9:9 Other Explorers In 1513 Juan Ponce de Leon traveled and discovered the land we call Florida today.


Slide 10:10 In 1539 Hernado De Soto discovered the waters of the Mississippi River.


Slide 12:12 In 1540 Francisco Coronado led an expedition into the Southwestern part of the Americas. Coronado discovered the Grand Canyon.


Slide 13:13 After the Spanish explorers made their discoveries they set up settlements in the Americas. They set up pueblos or small centers for farming and trade. They also set up forts made of adobe brick called Presidios. Lastly, they set up religious settlements called missions.


Slide 14:14 A Class System The people in the Spanish Colonies were divided into four social classes. A social class is when we group people according to how much money they have. Peninsulares—people born in Spain Creoles—people born in the Americas to Spanish parents Mestizos—people of mixed Spanish and Indian background Indians—treated as conquered people


Slide 15:15 Native American and African Workers Slaves were brought to the Americas to work on the farms to replace the Native American Indians that were dying of diseases. They worked as slaves just as the Native American Indians did on plantations. A plantation was a large estate farmed by many workers.
