Americans called for War!The XYZ Affair :Americans called for War!The XYZ Affair The French foreign minister, Charles Maurice de Talleyrand would not deal directly with the Americans.
Instead he sent three secret agents to offer the Americans a deal.
“You must pay money before we can begin the talks.” de Tallyrand wants $250,000 for himself and a loan of 10 million for France.
The XYZ Affair – “This was a bribe!” :The XYZ Affair – “This was a bribe!” “This was a bribe!” Replied the American diplomats.
Congress did not want to reveal the names of the three agents, so they were referred to as X, Y and Z. the Paris Monster: an American cartoon of 1798 on the 'XYZ' Affair; the five-man Directory ruling France demands money at dagger's point from the American commisioners.
War fever ignited! :War fever ignited! Soon the Americans heard about the XYZ Affair in 1798 and were outraged and refused to pay a bribe to France.
Adams refused to ask Congress to declare war.

Federalists pass through several laws :Federalists pass through several laws During the crisis with France the Federalists passed through several laws known as the Alien and Sedition Acts. Sedition – stirring up rebellion against a government
The Alien Act :The Alien Act The Alien Act allowed the president to expel any alien, or foreigner thought to be dangerous to the country.
The Sedition Act, anyone stirring up a rebellion against the government could be fined or jailed.
Jefferson – Sedition Act violates 1st Amendment :Jefferson – Sedition Act violates 1st Amendment Since the Federalists controlled the courts Jefferson urged states to take action.
Kentucky and Virginia pass the Kentucky and Virginia resolutions which stated that each state had an equal right to judge for itself whether a law was constitutional.
Within a few years both laws
were changed or dropped
The Election of 1800 :The Election of 1800 As the election of 1800 - Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr ran for the office of the President.
The vote was a deadlock, or tie. But when the Electoral College voted, Jefferson won the election.
Under the Constitution, the House of Representatives decides the election in the case of a tie vote.
A new president :A new president Thomas Jefferson was the new president of the United States.
