I heard dogs were once wolves. I thought this was an interesting fact. This made me want to know more about them and how did they go from wolf to dog. ? DESCRIPTION : DESCRIPTION Description : Description The wolf is one of the largest members of the dog family. Wolves weighs 75 to 120 pounds. Most wolves are gray. Adaptations : Adaptations Wolves have sharp teeth that helps them bite meat. Their coats are made up of wooly fur to keep them warm. The gray wolf's large paws provide traction. HABITAT : HABITAT General Habitat Information : General Habitat Information Wolves once occupied a vast array of habitats well into the temperate and even subtropical and desert areas. Now they are rare or absent except in northern forests and arctic tundra. Wolves like the forested areas of Northern Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Temperatures : Temperatures Wolves live in many different climates. The gray wolf prefers cooler climates instead of warmer ones. They have lived in all habitats in the Northern Hemisphere except for tropical forest. Water : Water Wolves require water to survive. Wolves may be found near ponds, rivers, streams. Wolves drink water just like a dog drinks, standing up and lowering it's head to the water. Plant life : Plant life Wolves live in areas with lots of plant life. They depend on the plants to provide shelter and keep their prey fed. Types of plants include trees, bushes, flowers, and shrubs. Animals life : Animals life Wolves are carnivores. You will find other animals in their habitat like moose, caribou, and other deer-like animals. When food is scarce, they will eat rodents. SENSORY ORGANS : SENSORY ORGANS Sight : Sight Wolves' vision is very motion sensitive. They have excellent night vision. They can't see color. Smell : Smell A wolf can smell a deer more than a mile. The sense of smell of a wolf is very good. A wolf can smell up to a mile. Hearing : Hearing They have fine hearing. the sense of hearing is the most acute of the wolf's senses. Wolves can hear as far as six miles away in the forest and ten miles in the open. Taste : Taste Wolves eat caribou, moose, and elk. They will eat both fresh and scavenged food It is not known if they have taste buds. Touch : Touch Wolves use their touch to find their cubs. Wolves use touch to navigate around their habitat. Wolves use their sense of touch when there’s danger. Food and Life Cycle : Food and Life Cycle Life Cycle : Life Cycle The pups are born blind, deaf, and completely dependent on their mother. There are 5-6 born at a time. When they reach two or three they are considered adult and they leave to join or start packs on their own. Wolves usually live 6 to 10 years in the wild. Food Chain : Food Chain The sun makes the plants The deer, moose and elk eat the plants The wolf eats the deer, moose and elk The hunter or other wolves get the wolf.
