I picked this animal because, we are composting in our class and I thought it would be cool to do my project on it. Description : Description Description : Description They are invertebrate animals and are cold-blooded. They are only a few inches in length Earthworms’ bodies are made up of ring-like segments. These Segments are covered in setae, or small bristles, which the worm uses to move and burrow. They have five hearts Adaptations : Adaptations The worm's streamlined body is an adaptation to living in narrow burrows underground Earthworms don't have eyes, but they do have light-sensitive cells. Earthworms have simple brains which specialize in directing body movement in response to light, and not much else. Habitat : Habitat General Habitat : General Habitat They live in Europe, but are now in North America and western Asia. They are originally from Europe, but are now abundant in North America and western Asia. You will not find earthworms in very cold regions like Alaska or Antarctica. Temperatures : Temperatures Worms don’t like it too cold or too hot. It has to be at least 65-77 F Worms die in extreme temperatures Water : Water Worms’ bodies are 80% water Humid conditions are important to their survival. If they do not live in moist, humid conditions, their skin will dry out and they will suffocate. Plant Life : Plant Life There are a lot grass where earthworms live They rely on plants even though they live underground. They eat some of the plant matter Animal Life : Animal Life There are a variety of animals such as birds, snakes, and lizards in their environment. They have to be careful not to become the prey of other animals. If they stay underground they are normally safe. Sensory Organs : Sensory Organs Sight : Sight They have no eyes so they can’t see. Earthworms are sensitive to light They “see” through special cells on their body Smell : Smell They have no nose Earthworm’s smell through their skin. They use this way to locate food Hearing : Hearing Worms do not have ears They don’t hear sounds like humans and other animals do. They “hear” vibrations through their skin that causes them to react in their environment. Taste : Taste It is not sure if they have taste buds or not. We are composting and I see they eat certain foods, so I assume they have some way of tasting. They like apples but they, they avoid oranges. Touch : Touch They don’t have arms, and legs, so they don’t touch like normal animals They feel vibrations through there skin. They use their body to feel around unfamiliar places. They move through the soil by contracting and relaxing their muscles. Food and Life Cycle : Food and Life Cycle Life Cycle : Life Cycle Earthworms lay eggs The eggs hatch after two weeks There is one or two that hatch out of each egg In a year they are able to lay eggs Some earthworms can live 10 year or longer Earthworm Eggs Food Chain : Food Chain The sun makes the plants The earthworm eats the leaves, seeds and grass clippings. The birds, snakes, and leeches eat the worms. help Interesting Facts : Interesting Facts Interesting Fact #1 : Interesting Fact #1 Australia has 650 known species of native earthworms. Interesting Fact #2 : Interesting Fact #2 The largest earthworm ever found was in South Africa and measured 22 feet from its nose to the tip of its tail. Interesting #3 : Interesting #3 An earthworm can replace or grow back lost body parts. Interesting #4 : Interesting #4 Earthworms don’t need another mate to have babies. They have both boy and girl reproductive parts.
