I picked this animal because I see them in movies and at the zoo. You can see them at the Columbia zoo and the movie Tarzan. Description : Description Description : Description African elephants have gray wrinkled skin, a long trunk, four foot long tail, it has five toes but only three nails on the foot, has tusks, mouth and large eyes to see danger, and last but not least huge ears. Adaptations : Adaptations An elephant’s trunk has many uses including picking up food, drinking water, and communicating with other elephants. To stay comfortable in the heat, an elephant can flap its ears and create a cooling effect. The large teeth in the elephant’s mouth are used for chewing and grinding very chewy plant materials. Habitat : Habitat General Habitat Information : General Habitat Information African elephants live in grasslands. African elephants live in central Africa. Asian elephants inhabit India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Bangladesh, and southern China. Habitat loss is one of the key threats facing elephants Temperature : Temperature Elephants are warm blooded. Wallowing in mud helps the elephant cool off and regulate its body temperature. Elephants have difficulty in releasing heat through the skin because they have very little skin. Water : Water They travel great distance to find water. They use water to cool off. They use water to drink . Plants Life : Plants Life Plants are very important to elephants Elephants rip apart all kind of plants, and knock down trees with the tusks if they are not able to reach the tree leaves. Elephants eat large amounts of plants Animal Life : Animal Life There are lots of animals in the elephants habitat. Some of them are predators like lions. Some of them are other plant eaters like zebras and giraffes. Sensory Organs : Sensory Organs Sight : Sight Elephants have good eye sight to see danger and watch their babies. Elephants can see at night. Most elephants can escape danger by watching where the predators are. Smell : Smell Their trunk is to grab and smell things. Before elephants eat the food they grab they smell their food. Elephants smell their food to make sure their food isn’t poisonous . Hearing : Hearing They have big ears to hear their babies and listen for danger. They make sure that when they go to look for food they listen for danger so when the danger comes the will know what to do. They listen for there babies and other animals. Taste : Taste They have a mouth They use their mouth to eat different plants. They seem to prefer certain plants, which makes me think they have tastes buds Their teeth are good for grinding tough bark. Touch : Touch Elephants can feel through their skin. They touch their food they eat. They touch their partner and hold there tail. They communicate through touch. Food and Life Cycles : Food and Life Cycles Life Cycle : Life Cycle Female elephants give birth after two years of being pregnant. Puberty is reached around thirteen or fourteen years of age and those calf-bearing years last until approximately age fifty. Elephants have a life expectancy of about sixty years, but have been observed to live more than seventy.
