Welcome to the World of   BALL PYTHONS By: Mariela & Brooke hello

Slide 2:

Why  We Picked This Animal   We picked the Ball Python because Mariela has a Ball Python. We thought it would be fun to do a project on an animal that one of us had. That way we can learn more about them and sound knowledgeable when people ask us about him (Cratos).

Slide 3:

DESCRIPTION

Slide 4:

DESCRIPTION Ball Pythons are usually long and medium size.  They grow up to be 3 to 4 feet.  Ball pythons also have tan spots with a dark brown background.  They can have over 30 spots in them.  When they are in a ball there only about 2 to 3 in. A ball python is a cold-blooded vertebrate.

ADAPTATIONS :

ADAPTATIONS Ball Pythons can curl up in a ball and hide its head when attacked. This ball is tight enough that a human cannot untangle it.    A Ball Python is is able to capture and eat animals up to three times the size of its head.   Ball pythons have small pits around the top of the mouth, used to sense heat from prey while hunting.

HABITAT :

HABITAT

Slide 7:

Ball Pythons are found at the edges of the forest lands of central and western Africa.  This habitat helps them because there blood needs balance in heat to survive. GENERAL HABITAT INFORMATION

Slide 8:

TEMPERATURES Tempertures for a ball python are often 80 degrees or up.   When temperatures get high Ball Pythons have to go in their burrow to cool off.   If the tempaturatures are right, and a ball python just got done eating, they will sit on a rock and absorb heat from the rock.

Slide 9:

WATER Ball pythons are native to very warm, but not hot, dry areas in Africa.    They are usually found in areas with good cover near open water where it can cool itself during hot weather.    When a Ball Python drinks they coil up and then lift their head up and stick their mouth in the water to get a drink.

Plant Life :

Plant Life Not many plants grow in the grasslands. There are not many plants because theres not alot of rainfall. The only plants that grow there is elephant grass and trees. These plants help the  Ball Python because the Ball Python can blend in with it's environment.

Slide 11:

Animal Life The small animals that live near the Ball Python which become food are rodents and rabbits and more.    The bigger animals that live near the Ball Python that are considered predators are birds of prey.

SENSORY ORGANS :

SENSORY ORGANS SIGHT, SMELL, HEAR, TASTE, TOUCH

Slide 13:

It is unknown if snakes can see or not but it is belived that snakes can only see body heat. SIGHT

SMELL :

SMELL Ball Pythons smell with their tongue.    When they stick out their tongue there is an organ in its mouth that collects smells A Ball Python rubs it tongue against the organ and then it will know if something is a girl or boy or foe.

Slide 15:

TASTE   Ball Pythons can taste by using their tongue like any other snakes and animals. Most Ball Pythons are very picky about what they eat.

Slide 16:

HEAR   Ball pythons have poor eyesight and poor hearing, but they make up for this in their sense of smell and in their ability to sense vibrations.

Slide 17:

TOUCH   Ball Pythons touch with their tongue and bodies. Most of the time they use their tongue.

FOOD AND LIFE CYCLE :

FOOD AND LIFE CYCLE

LIFE CYCLE :

LIFE CYCLE Females lay four to ten eggs in a burrow.  Except for searches for water to drink, the females remain coiled around the eggs for the entire 75-80-day incubation period. Most females eat little or nothing until their eggs hatch. The hatchlings are 9-17 inches long. Reproductive maturity is reached at 12-18 months for males, 24-36 months for females. Ball Pythons generally live 10 years in the wild, and often 20-30 years in captivity (the record is 47 years).
