Breaks up monotony We live in a digital age Students are increasingly technology savvy Using technology makes your classroom more interactive Provides more opportunities to communicate with students and parents outside of the classroom More fun! Reasons for Using Technology in Your Classroom

YouTube : 

YouTube Provides a visual and auditory representation of the material Has first-hand recordings of historical events (ex: Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech) Students can upload their own instructional videos (class projects) YouTube

Networking Websites : 

Twitter Can provide up to the second updates about class events etc. to the students’ or parents’ cell phones. Provides another mode of communication between students/parents and the teacher Facebook Can create a class group with photos, discussion boards, etc. Yet again provides another form of communication Students can help other students (homework, projects) Networking Websites

Cell Phones : 

Pictures and video Most phones have cameras and are capable of producing video Can be used to create slideshows or video projects Texting Students can answer anonymously when teachers ask questions to the class Calculators, Calendars, Memos, etc. Cell Phones

Television : 

DVD Movies and documentaries are great ways to teach students Most schools have at least one DVD player that may be checked out May be hooked up to computers as a display for the class Television

Voice Recorders : 

Students can record themselves reading from the text and play it back later to themselves Better way for auditory learners to remember the text Students can record the teacher’s lecture Teachers could record themselves during the lecture This could benefit students that are absent Voice Recorders

Educational Online Games :

Podcasts : 

Many students carry I-pods or other MP3 players Incorporates audio and visual learning Provides a connection with the students Can be carried anywhere Used in a similar way as a newsletter Podcasts

Class Website :

Incorporates reading and writing into student learning Gives the student a personal connection with the assignment Blogs

Class Wiki :

Music : 

Play a song that will help the students connect with the lesson (ex: play “Eat It” by Weird Al Yankovic when talking about the digestive system) Helps students remember the lesson by connecting it with a familiar song A class CD can be made with all the songs used in a semester, or a playlist can be put on the website Music

Google Earth : 

Shows first hand what any point on earth looks like Almost like a “virtual field trip” Free for anyone to use Google Earth

PowerPoint Presentations : 

Teachers can use powerpoint presentations to aid in their lecture Teachers may have students create a powerpoint presentation as a project Provides another visual form of learning Slideshows may also be printed and handed out to the students for notes PowerPoint Presentations
