Which takes up more space? A ton of feathers or a ton of bricks? What characteristic of matter will help us answer this question? DENSITY!!! Objectives : Objectives Define what density is and how it can identify different materials. Calculate and manipulate the density equation. Use a scene from a movie to determine the mass of two objects using the density equation. What is density? : What is density? Density is the ratio of the mass of an object or substance to its volume. The unit for density is usually grams per milliliter (g/mL) Different substances have different densities Equal volumes of different substances will have different masses. How to Calculate Density : How to Calculate Density Step 1 - Find your known variables. (HINT: You will have 2 out of the 3) Step 2 - On the triangle, cover the letter of the missing variable. This will help you decide what operation to use (EX: cover up the “D”, you would then divide the “M” by the “V”) If the numbers are side by side, you multiply. D M V M How to Calculate Density : How to Calculate Density Step 3 - Write out the equation that you are going to use on your paper (Example from Step 2: D = M / V) Step 4 - Plug the values of your known variables into the equation. Step 5 - Solve the equation for your unkown variable, please include the correct units (Remember: M = Mass in grams, V = volume in mL, and D = Density in g/mL) Does Indiana Jones know the concept of Density? : Does Indiana Jones know the concept of Density? Slide 8: Make a list of things we must consider to determine if Indy knows his stuff! Consider All Factors(CAF) CAF : CAF Mass of bag of sand Mass of golden idol Sand : Sand To determine the mass of the bag of sand, we will need to know . . . Density of Sand = 2g/mL : Density of Sand = 2g/mL Volume of Sand = Finding the mass of the sand : Finding the mass of the sand Given Needed Relation Solution V = D = 2g/mL m D = m/V m = D*V Mass = Convert L to mL Golden Idol : Golden Idol To determine the mass of the golden idol, we will need to know . . . Density of Gold = 19.3g/mL : Density of Gold = 19.3g/mL Volume of Gold = Finding the mass of the Golden Idol : Finding the mass of the Golden Idol Given Needed Relation Solution V = D = 19.3g/mL m D = m/V m = D*V Mass = Convert L to mL Compare the two masses. Does Indy know the concept of Density? : Compare the two masses. Does Indy know the concept of Density? How could we argue that the scene is correct? How could we make the scene “scientifically” correct? Think of your own Movie Scene : Think of your own Movie Scene Over the next week think of some of the movies you have viewed. Identify one that you think has some interesting scenes we can test with science concepts! Density Websites : Density Websites Periodic Table of Elements sorted by density Overview of the concept of density An online density converter – this will let you convert density to other units of measurement.
