Slide 1:

1 How do you add fractions? How do you subtract fractions? How do you multiply fractions?

Objective :

2 Objective Add, subtract, and multiply fractions and mixed numbers expressing answers in simplest form.

Writing Fractions in Simplest Form :

3 Writing Fractions in Simplest Form A fraction is in simplest form when the only common factor of the numerator and denominator is 1. 2 • 1 = 2 3 • 1 = 3 2. 27 36 1. List the common factors. 2. Find the GCF. 3. Divide by the GCF.

Mixed Number / Improper Fraction :

4 Mixed Number / Improper Fraction When changing a mixed number to an improper fraction, you need to multiply the denominator by the integer, then add the numerator to the product. Rewrite 4 1/2 as an improper fraction. 9/2

Adding Fractions :

5 Adding Fractions Check for common denominators. Once the denominators are the same, add the numerators. Always simplify your answer.

Find the Sum :

6 Find the Sum 8/9 + 2/9 = 9/16 + 4/32 = 8 2/3 + 6 1/2 = 10/9 = 1 1/9 22/32 = 11/16 14 7/6 = 15 1/6

Subtracting Fractions :

7 Subtracting Fractions Check for common denominators. Once the denominators are the same, subtract the numerator. Always simplify your answer.

Find the Difference :

8 Find the Difference 4/5 - 2/5 = 8/12 - 4/9 = 9 - 6 5/8 = 2/5 8/36 = 2/9 2 3/8

Multiplying Fractions :

9 Multiplying Fractions Simplify fractions by removing common factors or rewriting as an improper fraction. Then, multiply the numerators and the denominators. Don’t forget to simplify your answer.

Find the Product :

10 Find the Product 3/4 • 1/2 = 3/8 • 2/5 = 2 2/3 • 3 1/4 = 3/8 6/40 = 3/20 26/3 = 8 2/3

Review! :

11 Review! How do you add fractions? How do you subtract fractions? How do you multiply fractions?

Find the Difference, Sum, and Product :

12 Find the Difference, Sum, and Product 5 - 2 3/4 4/5 + 3/10 5 1/5 • 5 5/6 2 ¼ 1 1/10 30 1/3
