Strong vs. WeakAcids & Bases :

Strong vs. WeakAcids & Bases

Strengths of Acids and Bases :

Strong acids and bases ionize 100% Only positive and negative ions remain; no original substance Weak acids and bases ionize very little (usually <5-10%) Original substance partially dissociates to form positive and negative ions Strengths of Acids and Bases HCl H2O H+ H+ H+ Cl- Cl- Cl- HF H2O H+ F- HF HF

Is it strong or weak? :

Is it strong or weak? Binary Acids – HCl, HBr, and HI are strong; all others are weak Ternary Acids (or Oxyacids) – If the difference between # of H and # of O is ≥2, it is a strong acid Bases – Hydroxides of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals are strong bases
