How to Balance Equations:

How to Balance Equations Count the number of each element on each side of the equation Pick an element to balance first. Use coefficients in front of products/reactants to make the number of atoms equal on both sides.

Hints for balancing::

Hints for balancing: Element appears on one side of the equation: In more than one place on one side of the equation By itself Balance it last! 2. Treat polyatomic ions as a single unit (if they appear on both sides of the equation).

PowerPoint Presentation:

Rule of Thumb Never change a subscript in an attempt to balance an equation – only change the coefficients. To change the subscripts would be to change the identity of the compounds present – and we can’t do that!!!

Back to our skeleton equation…:

Back to our skeleton equation… Elemental copper and aluminum chloride are formed when aluminum is added to a copper (II) chloride solution. Cu Cl (aq) 2 + Al Al Cl (aq) 3 + Cu 2 3 3 2 (s) (s)
