Chani gives P a crysknife; advises him about Jamis’ weakness. 294: Shield fighter inhibitions. P uses litany. 295: Stilgar thinks P toys with Jamis b/c he’s slow on attack. P draws first blood, on knife hand. 296: “The terrified man fights himself.” 297: P kills Jamis; J afraid he’ll enjoy it too much--his “eyes were bright.” 298: “Well-l-l, now--how does it feel to be a killer?” Stilgar warns P not to toy with him when the time comes to call him out. 298: Stilgar gives P secret tribal name of “Usul”=base of pillar. 299: Paul chooses name of manhood--after the jumping mouse--Muad’Dib. When he hears word, he fears for vision of jihad. Asks to be Paul-Muad’Dib--a slight variation on the vision. 300: Stilgar announces the rites for Jamis. Paul fears the jihad.

Bible: “From water does all life begin.” J is shaken that P knows this--hasn’t studied “mysteries.” 306: P “Jamis taught me…that…when you kill..you pay for it.” Cries. “Usul gives moisture for the dead.” People touch his cheek--feel the gift. 306: Shai-hulud = God? 307: Chani gives P the water from Jamis--he asks her to hold it for him--doesn’t realize it’s a courtship ritual. 309: P sees jihad, realizes that it is growing momentum. 309: They are in something like a cathedral of water. 310: 38 million decaliters of h2o, walled off from “little makers.” Thousands of such caches. 310: Religious ceremony at h2o. The dream of LK. “the man who had gone native.” 311: Chani: “Tell me about the waters of your birthworld.” Vision. 312: P sings love song to Chani. Thinks J is enemy--jihad.
