Chapter 5 :
Chapter 5 Yueh will betray Atreides to save Wanna.
Paul studies for journey.
38 Fremen have totally blue eyes--remember the dream?

Yueh gives Paul a special Bible--why?
Book opens by accident to Wanna’s favorite passage.
Yueh hates himself for betraying the good Atreides to the evil Harkonnens. Hates them!
Chapter 6 :
Chapter 6 Epigraph describes Duke: “His abiding love for his Bene Gesserit lady; the dreams he held for his son; the devotion with which men served him.
Duke and Jessica are NOT married. Why?
What is the son but an extension of the father?--Important theme
Duke has presence--and is present--here.
41 Paul: “Will it really be dangerous?” Knows Rev. Mom thinks Duke will die.
42 Along with Arrakis, Emp must give Duke directorship in CHOAM.
Melange is the most valuable export/resource/commodity.
43 Harkonnens have stockpiled spice for 20 yrs. OPEC?
Go into the trap, knowing “that’s the 1st step in evading it.
Duke KNOWS Emp works with Hark--anticipates Sardaukar.

Chapter 6 cont. Duke and Paul talk of Salusa Secundus--how the Sardaukar are so tough.
Fremen could be as tough as Sardaukar.

Chapter 7 :
Chapter 7 Epigraph: B.G. File talks about the importance of “seeding” cultures with a “prophecy pattern.” They did a good job on Arrakis--it’s a planet READY for Jessica and, especially, Paul.
Arrival in Arrakeen. Hark ran out of Carthag, big ugly megalopolis. Arrakeen is smaller, easier to defend, etc.
Leto wonders about Jessica’s unknown ancestry.
He had BOUGHT her from the B.G.!
Small argument over Bull’s Head and portrait of Old Duke.
Fremen servants. The Shadout Mapes is the head. She wants to serve Jess b/c the Missionaria Protectiva.
51 Planet “infested with Harkonnen intrigues.”
Duke wants to recruit veteran “spice hunters.”
52 The Shadout Mapes comes to serve Jessica--and to test her.
53 J KNOWS she has a weapon--a gift if she’s the ONE; her death if she is not! It’s a CRYSKNIFE--a “maker.”
54 “Maker” triggers SM’s conviction that J is the ONE. From tooth of “shai-hulud.” Must be bloodied after unsheathed. J cuts the SM. “You are ours. You are the one.”

Chapter 8 :
Chapter 8 “Yueh! A million deaths were not enough for Yueh!”
58 Importance of water. 1 date palm = 5 men. Fremen hate them.
59 Yueh’s plan is to strike Baron “in his gloating.”
61 Jessica knows there are secrets about water and ecology on Arrakis. Harkonnens have suppressed truths.
J believes that Yueh is bound to Atreides from hate of H.
63 Duke is cousin of Emp; Hark bought their titles.
The SPICE--never the same twice. Vaguely cinnamon.
64 Why didn’t J marry Duke? Alliances….
J hates Old Duke and his side of Leto--cold, callous, demanding, selfish--harsh and cruel as winter wind.
J knows he’s hiding something. Almost forces it, but then decides: “I should put more trust in my friends.”
