Premium member Presentation Transcript Multiplication in 7 Days : Multiplication in 7 Days Learning facts for fluency Prepared for The Monarch Middle/High School Copyright The Monarch School, Inc. 2010 Parent Letters : Parent Letters Getting parents on board and believing this can work is your key to success! A letter goes home every day, explaining the rule of the day. Parents sign each night to verify their participation. Day 1-Set the Stage : Day 1-Set the Stage To begin, I recommend that students be given a blank multiplication table without the products and have them complete the table. To complete the table they may use any prior knowledge, manipulatives, or strategy they choose. Day 1-Set the Stage : Day 1-Set the Stage Completing the table will help them learn how to “read the table,” and will allow them to discover some of the patterns in the table. Every day, students complete the table for practice, filling in what they have learned. Day 1-Rule 1 : Day 1-Rule 1 Anything times zero is zero. Those facts don’t need to be memorized. 2 X 0 = 0 3 X 0 = 0 4 X 0 = 0 Day 1-Rule 2 : Day 1-Rule 2 Any number times 1 is that same number. 2 X 1 = 2 3 X 1 = 3 4 X 1 = 4 Day 1-Rule 3 : Day 1-Rule 3 Commutative property- 3 X 5 = 15 4 X 5 = 20 6 X 5 = 30 5 X 3 = 15 5 X 4 = 20 5 X 6 = 30 Students only need to memorize the concept and know it can be reversed. Concepts of good instruction : Concepts of good instruction Exploration (Mult. table) Direct Instruction (Teach Rules) Modeling (Overhead transparency, fill in mult. table based ONLY on the rules learned to demonstrate patterns.) Guided practice (Call on students to answer fact questions.) Independent practice- Classroom worksheet and homework. Slide 10: Day 2 : Day 2 Follow procedures of good instruction. Remember-every day, students independently complete the mult. fact table before instruction to practice patterns learned. Circulate to ensure everyone is completing the table fluently. Day 2 : Day 2 Count by 2s aloud. Count by 5s aloud. Complete the overhead demonstrating the patterns for 2s and 5s. Up until now, no significant memorization has been required. Day 3 : Day 3 Squares- They must be memorized. No way around it. 2 X 2 = 4 7 X 7 = 49 3 X 3 = 9 8 X 8 = 64 4 X 4 = 16 9 X 9 = 81 5 X 5 = 25 10 X 10 = 100 6 X 6 = 36 Review the points : Review the points Good instruction = Exploration Direct Instruction Modeling Guided Practice Independent Practice A helpful way to reinforce… : A helpful way to reinforce… Have multiplication table as your Do-Now in the mornings for practice. Play Around-the-World with multiplication facts. Have students make their own flash cards as you learn the facts. Day 4 : Day 4 Count by 3s. Sing the 3 song (from Multiplication Rock, write the pattern on the board. Count by 4s. Sing the 4 song to Row, Row, Row Your Boat. Write the pattern on the board. Reinforcements are visual and musical. Don’t forget to fill in multiplication tables before and after the lesson!! After the lesson, have students fill in the form using the commuting property. Notice how full the form is! Day 5 : Day 5 Memorize- 7 X 6 = 42 6 X 9 = 54 6 X 7 = 42 9 X 6 = 54 6 X 8 = 48 8 X 6 = 48 Slide 20: At this point, I figure you are tired of practicing the fill-in-the-blank. Day 6 : Day 6 Memorize- 7 X 8 = 56 8 X 9 = 72 8 X 7 = 56 9 X 8 = 72 7 X 9 = 63 9 X 7 = 63 Day 7 : Day 7 Rule of 10s-slap a zero on the end. 2 X 10 = 20 3 X 10 = 30 4 X 10 = 40 Day 8 : Day 8 I know, it’s Multiplication in 7 days. But on the 8th day, they tested. Slide 24: The more fun and practice that you put into it without making it feel overwhelming or boring, the more easily they will learn it. Package : Package The package includes everything you need and is considered a black-line master. PLEASE send home the parent letters!! The homework and parent component are extremely important. Follow up : Follow up To maintain fluency, take 3 minutes and do a timed practice. You can turn part of your wall into a Top Five– Every child has their name on a card. The top five children who get the highest number correct make the Top Five list.
