Keep them handy all the time, at all the places; and taste success ! THINKING TOOLS FOR PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS PART - II THE FIRST STEP BEING EFFECTIVE IS NOT COMPULSORY - IT IS YOUR CHOICE AND RESPONSIBILITY TOO. THE FIRST STEP

PowerPoint Presentation:

There are universal principles and values. If we go against them, we will harm ourselves. The principles and values shall remain for ever. The tools in this booklet are based on principles and values. We need to interpret them in right perspective. The process of interpretation should be supported by honest and intense reflection. Facts do not cease to exist because we ignore them. MAKE THE DIFFERENCE Before you read further - These ‘THINKING TOOLS’ are with you either as a training material of my program or as a book. These tools are for the people who want to look within themselves to solve their problems. You may not find all the tools relevant to you. No problem. Select the pages you find relevant and reflect on the ideas therein. Add your own pages. Use the concepts. Practise the concepts. Action is the key to success.

PowerPoint Presentation:

The Almighty has equipped us with two things: Capacity to work (write) Capacity to re-work (rectify the mistakes – erase) The most important thing to remember is to maintain a balance between both the capacities. Too much of rectification would retard the progress drastically. An introspective question: Am I making mistakes repeatedly and wasting my energy to rectify?? XXXXXX MISTAKES IF ERASER GETS CONSUMED BEFORE THE LEAD ……? A CAPACITY TO WRITE CAPACITY TO ERASE B A B

PowerPoint Presentation:

Principles are universal and cannot be changed. If your policies go against universal principles - beware you may be going against yourself. We impulsively go against universal truths; and pay the price in the long run. Let us reflect: FACTS DO NOT CEASE TO EXIST BECAUSE OF OUR DENIAL. PRINCIPLES GAP ISSUE INDIVIDUAL POLICY UNIVERSAL PRINCIPLES YOUR ACTION ACTION GUIDED BY PRINCIPLE GAP

PowerPoint Presentation:

We have been blessed with the choices to choose. To identify and choose the right option for action is the key to success. Ask a simple question: Is your choice resulting in overall effectiveness? Is it taking you towards your life goals? Is the choice value-driven or impulse-driven? FRAMES ISSUE CHOICE - 1 CHOICE - 2 CHOICE - 3 CHOICE - 4 CHOICE - 5 ACCEPTING AVOIDING FLEXIBLE ENABLING DISABLING LONG-TERM RIGID SHORT-TERM VALUE BASED IMPUSIVE

PowerPoint Presentation:

Many a times we are faced with the problem of ‘what is right’ and ‘what is wrong’. I use the model from the book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by asking four questions: Is my thinking or action increasing my SECURITY - Physical, Intellectual, Social, Financial, Spiritual? Is my thinking or action increasing my WISDOM? Is my thinking or action giving my GUIDANCE - Short term as well as Long term for effectiveness in life? Is my thinking and action increasing my POWER to perform? All positive answers would justify our thoughts and actions. EVALUATING ACTION EVALUATION CRITERIA YOUR THINKING OR ACTION 1. SECURITY 2. WISDOM 3. GUIDANCE 4. POWER

PowerPoint Presentation:

This is another tool I would recommend to differentiate between ‘what is right’ and ‘what is wrong. The three filter principle advocates three questions: Is my thought or action based on truth? Is my thought or action good? Is my thought or action useful? I would apply these filters even before I listen. It will be possible to avoid a lot of junk occupying valuable space of our memory. THREE FILTERS FILTER OF TRUTH FILTER OF GOODNESS FILTER OF USEFULNESS YOU ARE THINKING, TALKING, OR LISTENING. WHETHER IT IS - TRUE ? GOOD ? USEFUL ?

PowerPoint Presentation:

The above is not a thinking tool. The table has been taken from books on psychology. The table gives positive and negative qualities we acquire during various phases of our life. The table is self explanatory. It can be used for self-evaluation and to take action to negate negative qualities acquire in past and to acquire positive qualities in future. LIFE POSITIVE INFANCY TRUST DISTRUST TODDLER AUTONOMY DEPENDENCY PRE-SCHOOLAR INITIATIVE GUILT SCHOOLAR INDUSTRY INFERIORITY ADOLESCENT IDENTITY ROLE CONFUSION YOUNG ADULTHOOD INTIMACY ISOLATION LATER ADULTHOOD GENERATION STAGNATION OLD AGE EGO INTEGRITY DESPAIR NEGATIVE STAGE ATTRIBUTES ACQUIRED DURING VARIOUS STAGES OF LIFE

PowerPoint Presentation:

Understand the difference between ‘Intelligence’ (power) and ‘Thinking’ (skill). Thinking can be measured as follows: Fluency : Speed at which you think of points about an issue in given time. This is represented by number of points. Elaboration : The minute details thought. Flexibility: Number of directions covered by you. Originality: You thought of something new. Rational : Your thinking resulted in effectiveness. MEASURING THINKING QUANTITY EVALUATING THINKING FLUENCY - SPEED QUANLITY ELABORATION - DETAILS FLEXIBILITY - VARIETY ORIGINALITY - UNIQUE EFFECTIVE - RATIONAL THINKING IS A SKIIL WHICH CAN BE MEASURED, TAUGHT, AND LEARNT.

Let us reflect over three terms: Employable Not employable Available There are plenty of people available; but very few of them are employable. Even you may find unemployable people who are employed. Work on your employability and market value every moment. AVAILABLE AND FIT EMPLOYABLE YOU ARE AVAILABLE ARE YOU FIT FOR USE ? ARE YOU UNFIT FOR USE ? NOT EMPLOYABLE

PowerPoint Presentation:

Most of our inter-personal conflicts are not because of our motives or intentions; the basic reason is our behaviour. Most of us do not know how to make our intentions known to others in right way. We communicate ‘contents’ and think the job is done. We never bother about the ‘process’ of communicating and delivering the ‘contents’. Let us learn the process of communicating our intentions. Let us not bother about the inappropriate process followed by others. INTENTION CHECK INTER-PERSONAL CONFLICT INTENTION BEHAVIOUR VISIBLE NOT VISIBLE TWO FACTS 1. WE ARE NOT TRAINED TO EXPRESS OUR INTENTIONS EXPLICITLY. 2. IMPROPER BEHAVIOUR NOT NECESSARILY MEAN ILL INTENTIONS.

PowerPoint Presentation:

When we interact with others, we may take the positions as shown above. The best position is I win - you win. This position is based on the mindset of I am okay - You are okay. When you make others lose, you may be trying to win aggressively. When you allow others to win at your cost, you may be submitting or yielding. When both the parties lose, your stand may be because of confusion, utter frustration, helplessness and hopelessness. WIN-LOSE RELATIONSHIP I I LOSE YOU LOSE YOU I WIN YOU LOSE I LOSE YOU WIN I WIN YOU WIN WIN LOSE WIN LOSE

Setting targets? Making an action plan ? Thinking about a problem or issue ? Solving a management case ? Use 5W-2H method for framing questions …. Answers would follow … You will understand the situations both in quantity and quality which will enable you to take effective action. 5W-2H QUESTIONS WHAT ? SITUATION DECISION ACTION PLAN WHY ? WHEN ? WHERE ? WHO ? HOW ? HOW MUCH ? ASK 5W2H QUESTIONS

PowerPoint Presentation:

Whenever we are faced with choice, impulsively we look for short term gratification and opt for pleasant one. We should ask ourselves a few questions: Is the pleasant option giving good and beneficial outcome? Is the pleasant option giving permanent benefit? Are you opting pleasant option to avoid hardships? Have you considered long term price which would follow pleasant option? Is pleasant option value based? PLEASANT OR GOOD SITUATION MAY NOT BE PLEASANT YOUR CHOICE GOOD PLEASANT MAY NOT BE GOOD

PowerPoint Presentation:

When we are faced with problems, difficulties, and failures - We start looking outside ourselves to locate the sources of problems instead of looking inside. We start blaming the circumstances around us instead of creating enabling circumstances to succeed. We blame instead of taking responsibility. Who is responsible for our disabling actions and disabling outcome – Are not we ourselves? ENEMY OR FRIEND YOU YOUR ENEMY NUMBER - 1 BIGGEST OBSTACLE CREATOR PROGRESS BLOCKER PROBLEM CREATOR FEAR CREATOR ACTION AVOIDER IMPULSIVE GUIDE CONVERT YOUR ENEMY NO.1 TO YOUR FRIEND NO. 1.

PowerPoint Presentation:

There are four basic categories of performing people. The choice of method depends on the situation and the outcome expected. Decide … for yourself. However, you must remember – Never be the last type. WALK-TALK TALK WALK TALK WALK TALK WALK WALK BEFORE AFTER BUT NEVER TALKS TOGETHER TALK BUT NEVER WALKS

PowerPoint Presentation:

Many of us would consider theories to be the objects of books. I differ. If theories are not for life, why do they exist at all? They should be discarded and abandoned. Study the cycle above. Experiment to validate a theory. Experiment would get converted to experience and outcome. Now it is for us to reflect to validate the theory. We need to create our own processes of validation. The process should be value-based, scientific and rational. A process based on impulses and emotions should be avoided. THEORY THEORY EXPERIMENTING EXPERIENCING RESULT REFLECTION VALIDATING THEORY

PowerPoint Presentation:

Here we need to differentiate between our actions – Actions taken by compulsion and actions taken to realize our aspirations. If we work out of compulsion, we nurture the mindset of a salve and a follower. Leaders, the free people, work because they want to. The compulsion and helplessness is not their motivation. They are motivated by their free will and aspirations. They do what they like and they like what they do. SELF-EVALUATION I WANT TO DO INERTIA AND RESISTANCE I AM DOING INERTIA AND LETHARGY ACTION UNDER COMPULSION DIRECTED PERFORMANCE YES NO YES NO

PowerPoint Presentation:

Whenever we are faced with choosing one options out of many alternatives available to us, our focus impulsively opts for easy ones. We put ourselves in comfort zones considering avoidance of pains. For a moment let us consider the long term consequences of the easy options. We learn less and work less and lose. Next time focus on things where things are difficult to learn and also difficult to do and see for yourself your gains in the short term as well as long term. EASY OPTION TO LEARN EASY TO LEARN EASY TO DO TO DO HARD TO LEARN EASY TO DO EASY TO LEARN HARD TO DO HARD TO LEARN HARD TO DO HARD EASY HARD EASY

PowerPoint Presentation:

You must have created a lot of perception about individuals, groups, places, systems and many other things you have encountered and experienced. I would like to ask two simple questions: How many perceptions have been created by you after validation considering facts? How many perceptions you have ‘just’ created without much of a thinking and you are using those perceptions for your actions, behavious , and decisions? You should locate your misleading perceptions. PERCEPTION WILL LEAD TO FACT-BASED ACTIONS YOUR PERCEPTION ABOUT PEOPLE – PLACE - SITUATIONS YOU CREATE BASED ON FACTS / EVIDENCES GETS CREATED AUTOMATICALLY BASED ON IMPULSES MAY MISLEAD TO UNDESIRABLE ACTIONS

PowerPoint Presentation:

When we encounter a situation, we form perception based on our frames of references. Naturally, in all likelihood, two people would use different frames and would create different perception about the same situation. This will result in perceptual gap. The gap can be further widened if both the people take positions and advocate their respective perceptions. However, if they ask relevant questions to understand each other, the gap can be narrowed down. PERCEPTION GAP GAP - 1 SITUATION MY FRAME OF REFERENCE YOUR FRAME OF REFERENCE MY PERCEPTION YOUR PERCEPTION OPTION - 1 ENQUIRE TO UNDERSTAND OPTION - 2 ADVOCATE TO BE UNDERSTOOD

PowerPoint Presentation:

We just discussed the perceptual gap. The other gap is the gap between our perception of a situation and the reality. Two people may have same perception and agreement. That does not necessary bring their perception closer to the reality. To understand the reality, our frames of references must have the following qualities: We should use multiple frames to see the situation from many angles to understand it better. Our frames should be broad to enable us to see the situation with broader perspectives Our frames should be clear, i.e. rational and non-emotional. REALITY GAP GAP - 1 SITUATION MY PERCEPTION YOUR PERCEPTION SINGULAR NARROW TAINTED MULTIPLE BROAD CLEAR REALITY GAP - 2 REALITY -VE FRAMES + VE FRAMES GAP - 3

PowerPoint Presentation:

The population can be divided into two basic categories considering commitment to achieve: On-purpose Off-purpose There cannot be any in-betweens. The on-purpose people are committed to what they want in life. They are determined and focused. They are visionaries. Nothing can put them off their track. They are great believers and performers. They ignore short term temptations. They do what they enjoy and enjoy what they do. TOTAL COMMITMENT Total Commitment It’s a commitment to a commencement - I get started! It’s a commitment to continuity - I follow through! It’s a commitment to concentration - I focus my all! It’s a commitment to completion - I finish what I start with excellence!
