Using iPads in the classroom :

Using iPads in the classroom Promotes interactive learning Effective studying Excitement about technology Promote group learning (online and offline) Can allow to adaptation to various learning styles

Setting :

Setting Mathematics Department at a Small Liberal Arts College in Georgia Obtained a grant to infuse innovative technology within one of their math classes Chose to use grant within one College Algebra Class 24 College Students, between the ages of 18-22

The Use of the iPad in college algebra :

The Use of the iPad in college algebra Each student was supplied an iPad with pre-loaded textbook and specialized mathematics software. The instructor developed a website where all classroom lessons were uploaded daily. The instructor also included supplemental instruction information on the website. At the beginning of each class, students downloaded the daily lesson, which included interactive online portions.

The Use of the iPad in college algebra – CONT’D :

The Use of the iPad in college algebra – CONT’D Special applications (“apps”) were developed for supplemental instruction, including video instruction. Homework modules were completed on the iPad and Bluetooth technology was used to submit assignments to the teacher or for display on the smart board. Live supplemental instruction and tutoring was provided online once a week by the instructor.

Technology Integration Results :

Technology Integration Results 45% increase in class participation as compared to other sections of College Algebra classes taught by instructor. 55% increase in on-time completed homework assignments as compared to other sections of College Algebra classes taught by instructor. All students within the technology infused College Algebra course received passing grades with 90% receiving a grade of B or better; while 70% of students in other non-technology infused College Algebra Classes received a passing grade with only 50% receiving a grade of B or better.

Support Issues :

Support Issues Occasional problems with campus wireless internet connection would cause issues within class (IE. No connection or slow connection). SmartBoard and other in-classroom equipment would be inoperable and not fixed in a timely manner. Students would mishandle iPads causing structural damage with delay in repair or replacement. Some “apps” would not download properly, causing delay in classroom.

Conclusion :

Conclusion Students thoroughly enjoyed class experience with technology infusion. Class was rated highest among all classes within Math Department. Math Department has committed to infusing technology (iPads) in all classes. Other departments are investigating how to infuse iPads within their classes. School is looking for ways to infuse cost of iPad within tuition.
