This was a logical Progression for our series. Points to Cover Today : Points to Cover Today Is Jesus’ resurrection an objective, historical truth? Why did Jesus die for us? Why was it necessary that He was raised? Given the answers to the questions being considered today, what should your response be? Evidence for the Resurrection? : Evidence for the Resurrection? We can spend all day on this one, but we will do a quick summary. We will look at the three facts that virtually everyone who has ever studied the evidence (inside and outside the Bible) agrees with. Jesus was really crucified and He really died. Jesus was really buried in a tomb and on Easter Sunday the tomb was empty People witnessed and experienced a living Jesus. Crucifixion : Crucifixion As a rule no one survives crucifixion “Excruciating” The idea was complete humiliation and slow agonizing death. Spear Thrust -> water and blood proved Jesus was dead. Crucifixion : Crucifixion Buried -> Empty Tomb : Buried -> Empty Tomb Jesus’ burial is as certain as anything can be 2000 yrs after the fact. If the Tomb was not empty than why didn’t anti-Christians of the time just produce the body? The Crucifixion, Burial, and Resurrection were not secret….it was all public Instead of producing a body, the authorities spread the lie that the disciples stole the body. Witnesses : Witnesses Earliest Christian records show that they believed and taught that Jesus is yet alive. Not enough time for legend to develop. It could not have been a hallucination because multiple people cannot have the same hallucination or dream at the same time! It could not have been wish fulfillment because Paul and James saw Jesus and they were not believers prior to their seeing Jesus These people went to their deaths rather than deny that Jesus was alive. What Is the Gospel: : What Is the Gospel: Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them.“ But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.“ For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:5-13 Summing up the Gospel : Summing up the Gospel Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 Important Notes on 1st Corinthians 15 : Important Notes on 1st Corinthians 15 1st Corinthians 15:3-5 is a short memorable creed that sums up the Christian message. Many date this creed to just a few years after the resurrection Paul argues the centrality of the Resurrection to Christianity 1st Corinthians 15:12-19 : 1st Corinthians 15:12-19 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. Jesus’ Mission and Purpose : Jesus’ Mission and Purpose All of human history either leads up to Jesus’ life, crucifixion, and resurrection or depends upon Jesus. Jesus is the foundation of Christianity. You cannot be a Christian and deny Jesus’ person or work. The Resurrection is definitional for Christianity Jesus is God’s “Plan A” : Jesus is God’s “Plan A” And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. Romans 5:5-7 Jesus is the way, truth and the Life : Jesus is the way, truth and the Life Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him." John 14:5-7 Jesus is our only liberator : Jesus is our only liberator But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am the one I claim to be, you will indeed die in your sins." John 8:23-24 Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith : Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:1-3 Jesus our Propitiation : Jesus our Propitiation This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement,[a] through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. Romans 3:22-26 Footnotes: Romans 3:25 Or as the one who would turn aside his wrath, taking away sin We need Jesus : We need Jesus What shall we conclude then? Are we any better? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one." "Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit." "The poison of vipers is on their lips." "Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness." "Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know." "There is no fear of God before their eyes." Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. – Romans 3:9-20 You are the worse Sinner that you know. How should you respond? : How should you respond? If you are saved: Pray Praise Worship Then you will be clothed with Power He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.“ Acts 1:7-8 Christians do: : Christians do: Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. – 1st Corinthians 6:19-20 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Romans 12:1 What should you do? : What should you do? If you are not saved - get Saved! Romans 10:9,10 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the desert, where your fathers tested and tried me, though they had seen what I did. Psalms 95:7-9 Final Exhortation : Final Exhortation As God's fellow workers we urge you not to receive God's grace in vain. For he says, "In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.“ I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:1,2 The Resurrection : The Resurrection Some Music : Some Music Hazakim’s Passover Lamb You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
