What is an Externship? : 

What is an Externship? “Externships are experiential learning opportunities, similar to internships, offered by educational institutions to give students short practical experiences in their field of study.” -from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Externship MIT Student/Alumni Externships| The offer of an opportunity comes from the MIT Alumni Association not the alumnus/a sponsor Not for credit 1-4 weeks of IAP

2010-2011 Student Timeline September 22 – October 13 The application process October 13, 9 a.m. FINAL Student Application Deadline Grant Application Deadline October 15-November 4 Sponsors review applications and may contact students for in-person or phone interview. November 5, 5 p.m. Student withdraw deadline November 15 First round matching – students notified November 17, 5 p.m. First round student reply deadline November 22 Second round matching – students notified November 24, 5 p.m. Second round student reply deadline December 8 or 9, 6 p.m. Required Orientation in Bush Room (10-105) January 3-28, 2011 Independent Activities Period 2011

Application Process Go to http://alum.mit.edu/students/externships Get Infinite Connection Account Search Listings Create cover letter and resume (one PDF document) Apply Can only apply for up to 3 opportunities

Helpful Hints Review the opportunities – don’t apply too early or too late. DO NOT WAIT until 8:55 a.m. on October 13. Apply for only opportunities you will accept – have a plan if it is outside of Cambridge. What is more important - having an externship or having a specific externship (withdraw deadline November 5)? Remember if must be a PDF document. Go to the Careers Office. International Students: Must be ADVISED BY ISO! Be Professional.
