BROADBAND OVER POWERLINE COMMUNICATIONS….. :

BROADBAND OVER POWERLINE COMMUNICATIONS….. 1

INTRODUCTION TO PLC :

INTRODUCTION TO PLC 2  "Power Line Communications" basically means any technology that enables data transfer at narrow or broad band speeds through power lines by using advanced modulation technology.  Depending on the country, the institution & company, power line communications are grouped under several different key words: PLC (Power Line Communications) PLT (Power Line Telecommunications) PPC (Power Plus Communications)

WHAT IS PLC ??? :

WHAT IS PLC ??? 3  In the late 1990s, a number of companies from all over the world began serious research into exactly how to get high-speed signals across the network of electrical power lines. By 2004, the technology advanced to the point where hundreds of megabits per second could be transferred around the home .  Audio wire carries music. Coax cables carry HDTV signals. Ethernet cables carry Internet & computer data. Telephone lines carry telephone signals. And power lines carry electrical power - and music - and HDTV - and Internet - and telephone signals - and high-speed data!

WHY PLC ??? :

WHY PLC ??? 4 It's Plug and play:  No more wires, just plug in  Share your Internet connection  Move your computers and appliances where you want  Easy to install and use  Secure data-encryption  One wire offers both power and your high-speed communications needs

JUST IMAGINE WHAT PLC CAN DO ????? :

BROADBAND :

BROADBAND 6 The term broadband refers to a telecommunications signal of greater bandwidth, in some sense, than another standard or usual signal (and the broader the band, the greater the capacity for traffic). Its origin is in radio systems engineering, but became popularized after MediaOne adopted it as part of a marketing campaign in 1996 to sell their high speed data access. The slogan was: "This is Broadband. This is the Way"

LET’S MOVE ON TO BPL…… :

LET’S MOVE ON TO BPL…… 8 Broadband over power line (BPL) is a technology that allows data to be transmitted over utility power lines. The technology uses medium wave, short wave and low-band VHF frequencies and operates at speeds similar to those of digital subscriber line (DSL).

BRIEF HISTORY OF BPL…… :

BRIEF HISTORY OF BPL…… 9 On 14 October 2004, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission adopted rules to facilitate the deployment of "Access BPL" -- i.e., use of BPL to deliver broadband service to homes and businesses.  One power line can be used for multiple independent networks. The benefits would be lower cost and weight (compared to separate power and control wiring), flexible modification, and ease of installation.

HOW BPL WORKS ??? :

HOW BPL WORKS ??? 10 With broadband over power lines, or BPL, you can plug your computer into any electrical outlet in your home and instantly have access to high-speed Internet. By providing high-speed data transmission between all of the electrical plugs in a house, there is the potential to network all kinds of common appliances in a household. If your alarm clock, light switch and coffee maker could talk each other via a high-speed connection, mornings might look a lot different.

BPL MODEM… :

BPL MODEM… 13  The BPL modem simply plugs into the wall and then into your computer. These modems are capable of speeds comparable to DSL or cable modems.

BPL modems use silicon chipsets specially designed to handle the work load of pulling data out of an electric current. Using specially developed modulation techniques and adaptive algorithms, BPL modems are capable of handling powerline noise on a wide spectrum. :

CHALLENGES…… :

CHALLENGES…… 15 Hundreds of thousands of volts of electricity don't vibrate at a consistent frequency. That amount of power jumps all over the spectrum. As it spikes and hums along, it creates all kinds of interference. If it spikes at a frequency that is the same as the RF used to transmit data, then it will cancel out that signal and the data transmission will be dropped or damaged en route. BPL bypasses this problem by avoiding high-voltage power lines all together. The system drops the data off of traditional fiber-optic lines downstream, onto the much more manageable 7,200 volts of medium-voltage power lines.

FINALLY CONCLUDING OUR TOPIC… :

FINALLY CONCLUDING OUR TOPIC… 16 With broadband over power lines, or BPL, you can plug your computer into any electrical outlet in your home and instantly have access to high-speed Internet. By combining the technological principles of radio, wireless networking, and modems, developers have created a way to send data over power lines and into homes at speeds between 500 kilobits and 3 megabits per second (equivalent to DSL and cable).
