WHAT DO U.S. PROFESSORS EXPECT?(based on research by Dr. Pete Collier, Professor of Sociology, Portland State University, Oregon): Attend class and do not be disruptive. Be prepared. If you don’t understand – something in class, the syllabus, an assignment – ask questions. Make use of the professor’s office hours. Read the syllabus and follow the instructions the professor gives for the class. Find out the location of things like the writing lab, library, computer labs, and tutors. Make sure the institution has your current email address on file, and check your email frequently. Follow instructions for writing assignments. Be realistic about your time commitments.

Arrive early for class. Accept criticism. Use conference time effectively. Use course evaluations. Take further steps, if appropriate.
