Slide 6:

“No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit” Acts 19:2 What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit?

What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit?:

What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit? “Are you filled with the Spirit?” Misconception 1.  It is an emotional experience. Misconception 2.  It is reserved for special Christians. “The grand thing the church wants in this time is God’s Holy Spirit.” CH Spurgeon

From our reading:

From our reading “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.  Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” NIV “Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life.  Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you.” NLT

From our reading:

From our reading “Don’t drink too much wine. That cheapens your life.  Drink the Spirit of God, huge draughts of him.” Message

From our reading:

From our reading The contrast between wine and the Spirit. The point of comparison between wine and the Holy Spirit? Its about influence or control.

From our reading:

From our reading The contrast between wine and the Spirit. Wisdom for living. Understanding God’s will. A heart filled with praise. A heart filled with thanksgiving. An attitude of submission to God.

From our reading:

From our reading The command to be filled. Every Christian is to be filled with the Spirit all of the time.

From our reading:

From our reading It is for our “now”. An ongoing action not just a one off experience. “But ever be filled and stimulated with the (Holy) Spirit.” Amplified Version

From our reading:

From our reading It is the action of God not us. Sense of the word is in the passive voice not active. Not saying “fill yourself” but rather “be filled.” 1.  The Holy Spirit is ready and willing to fill us at any moment. 2.  We must make ourselves available to him.

From our reading:

From our reading It is the action of God not us. “Let the Holy Spirit fill and control you.” NLT

From our reading:

From our reading It is a plural command. God intends and desires that all his children be filled with the Holy Spirit.

From our reading:

From our reading It is a plural command. Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs v 19. Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ v 21.

From our reading:

From our reading It is a plural command. When the Holy Spirit fills us one by one, our corporate life will be transformed.

Keeping focused on the Spirit:

Keeping focused on the Spirit The Issue of Control. It’s what happens when the Holy Spirit has the controlling interest in your life. “control by consent.” Being filled with the Holy Spirit doesn’t mean I have more of the Spirit; it means the Spirit has more of me.

Keeping focused on the Spirit:

Keeping focused on the Spirit The Issue of Cooperation. Am I going to cooperate with the Holy Spirit and let him lead me or I am going to keep on trying to do things my own way?

Keeping focused on the Spirit:

Keeping focused on the Spirit The issue of Contact. His power is always available . Sometimes we live out of contact with his power.

Being filled:

Being filled God’s moment-by-moment provision for vitality, strength, courage, boldness, victory and the abundant life.

Being filled:

Being filled Some Christians are so full of themselves, they have no room for the Holy Spirit. Some Christians have simply closed their heart to the work of the Holy Spirit.

Being filled:

Being filled We need two things - emptiness and openness. There must be a sense of need: “Lord, I’m empty and I need to be filled by your Spirit.” There must be a willingness: “Lord, I’m open to you. Let your Spirit fill me now.”
