Forgiveness “Overcoming Struggles”:

Forgiveness “Overcoming Struggles” The Bottom Line

Overcoming struggles:

Overcoming struggles People being filled with God. People being healed miraculously . People being raised from the dead. We also read in those accounts of early Christianity, the struggle of ordinary people who walked with an extraordinary God.

Overcoming struggles:

Overcoming struggles People really cannot get it right - they never could and they still cannot. 1. What makes us struggle? 2. Issues of the past! 3. A pathway to love.

1. What makes us struggle?:

1. What makes us struggle? James 4:1 asks the question - where does all the fighting and conflict come from? Within our own hearts.

1. What makes us struggle?:

1. What makes us struggle? “there are various "crises" that develop naturally and inevitably at various points in life and that successful resolution of these crisis determines whether a person later experiences relative happiness, or discontent and neurosis.” Erik Erikson

1. What makes us struggle?:

1. What makes us struggle? In other words, we learn how to deal with life according to how life has dealt with us! Unresolved conflict in life produces conflict. We do not have problems - we are the problem.

1. What makes us struggle?:

1. What makes us struggle? "As a man thinks in his heart so he is," Proverbs 23:7

2. Issues of the past!:

2. Issues of the past! Without love we fail to thrive and become more prone to accidents and illness. Without love we cannot love others. Without love we become emotionally and mentally destabilised.

2. Issues of the past!:

2. Issues of the past! It is not without coincidence that Jesus founded His church upon a platform of love in relationships. Love is the glue which holds things together and the universal substitute for all conflict.

2. Issues of the past!:

2. Issues of the past! “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.......I command you, that you love one another.” John 15:9,17

2. Issues of the past!:

2. Issues of the past! Love is THE reason for living. So, what is a debt of love? How do we know if we have one?

2. Issues of the past!:

2. Issues of the past! A debt which they cannot pay! Once a debt has been incurred, our hearts hold onto that debt making it part of the fabric or our reality. We then view our lives through the unresolved pain of relational conflict.

2. Issues of the past!:

2. Issues of the past! How can we love those who have hurt us? How can we love those who should have known better? How can we love those who crippled our lives.

3. A pathway to love:

3. A pathway to love Those debts however need not dictate our lives. As a reward for David’s service, Saul threw spears! When someone is throwing spears - how do we react?

3. A pathway to love:

3. A pathway to love “ You have heard that it has been said, You shall love your neighbour, and hate your enemy. But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use and persecute you;” Matthew 5:43-44

3. A pathway to love:

3. A pathway to love This is radical stuff. How can I do that? God has given us a tool which helps us get over love debts, offences, betrayals, rejections and hurts. It is called forgiveness

3. A pathway to love:

3. A pathway to love It is the most powerful tool in the universe and it does not make sense! It goes against all human nature. But, without it we destroy ourselves and our future. That which is perpetrated against me is perpetuated by me when I hide it inside.

Facing the issues that bug us:

Facing the issues that bug us A people of Love. The process: Close your eyes Look at someone from your past who has hurt you in some way Begin to talk to them and tell them what they did and how it effected you in your life If you need to cry - go ahead

Facing the issues that bug us:

Facing the issues that bug us When you have finished telling the person make a decision. Choose to forgive them from the bottom of your heart. Look at them inside your mind and tell them - I forgive you. Decide to let go of the offence and the anger.

Facing the issues that bug us:

Facing the issues that bug us Now decide to love them - this does not mean affection or liking, it means to walk away from that moment without revenge. It means deciding to deal with them in the way they failed to deal with you. Now thank God for helping you.

Facing the issues that bug us:

Facing the issues that bug us “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” Galatians 2:20
