Introduce the Strategy /Skill: Using similes Simile: Comparing two unlike things using words such as “like” or “as.” –Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary i.e. Your smile is like a sunrise! Or Your eyes are like drops of honey. You use a simile to be creative and draw a picture in the reader’s mind of what you are saying.


2. Demonstrate the Strategy :2. Demonstrate the Strategy Start with an image in your mind. Be creative! Think of two objects that are different but that you can connect in a sentence. Say, “___is like__” or “___as ___.”


3. Provide guided practice :3. Provide guided practice Let’s have you try it: If you want to connect the T.V. to a trashcan…how could you turn that into a simile? In fact, give me a simile, any simile. Write it down on your paper and I will go around to give you feedback.


4. Review the strategy/skill :4. Review the strategy/skill In writing, using similes will make your sentences creative and “colorful.” It is more interesting to read, “you are as mad as a bull that sees red” than, “you are angry.”


5. Apply the strategy/skill :5. Apply the strategy/skill Now I want you to employ no less than 4 similes when you write your descriptive short essay. Remember that similes are meant to make your writing fun and come alive! Have fun!
