Seminar 2006 Faroe Islands NOVA beyond the horizon Present status and reflections on future possibilities. Comments on: Focus areas Mobility Funding Organisation External relations Paul Jensén, NOVA Rector Where are we? Where shall we?

Slide2:

Paul Jensén, 060519_oh_2/27 ”Nordic universities are reasonably ranked in international comparisons, reasonably but not on top. And it is doubtful whether it is genuinely possible for Nordic universities, working in relatively small countries, to place themeselves even close to Ivy League levels on their own. But joint efforts and division of labour may provide another solution, and who could be better equipped to succeed at this than the Nordic countries, with all our similarities and traditions. This is where NOVA is setting such a splendid example, and has understood well before many others what needs to be done. Education and science will be especially instrumental in helping the Baltic Sea region to fly. And again NOVA – BOVA cooperation has set a formidable example.” Per Unckel, Secretary General, Nordic Council of Ministers

Paul Jensén, 060519_oh_3/27 ”After working closely with the NOVA networks and following their activities, it is clear that, within agriculture and forestry research and training, the NOVA University Network provides an excellent example of oustanding Nordic values.” Lise Lykke Steffensen, Senior Advisor, Agriculture and Forestry, NMR NOVA and Nordic values ”The general view is that NOVA is ahead of most of the other European networks.” Cees M. Karssen, Former Rector of Wageningen University & Research Centre, The Netherlands

Slide21:

Paul Jensén, 060519_oh_12/27 ”NOVA University Network could not only capitalise on the future development of NORIA as a part of ERA, but is also in a position to offer important building blocks in developing ERA, to develop the future European higher education area and contribute to developing the much-needed links between reseach and education. Moreover, representing Nordic countries, NOVA could also be regarded as a door opener and facilitator for learning from the Nordic model as well as a brand for the Nordic model.” Gard Titlestad, Head of Dept. for Education, Research and IT-policies, Nordic Council of Ministers NOVA in Europe

The Nordic region as a Global Winner Region (NCM Report 2005) Paul Jensén, 060519_oh_18/27 According to 27 Nordic thought leaders: ”…the time for purely national strategies is past. There is a need to formulate an ambitious regional vision based on shared Nordic values and complementary strengths. This could create a global image of the Nordic Region as a strong value region that is committed to its core values and skills.” ”In a global economy it is about combining Nordic resources and forgetting any competition between the Nordic countries. The Nordic Region will only become a global winner if the countries have the ability and understanding to create synergy between their complementary skills.”
