What Christians believe: There is only ONE God ONE God exists as ONE in THREE Personalities. There are not 3 Gods but One! Each of Godhead has characteristics of personhood. Each has individual will, can speak, love, etc. Yet there is perfect harmony between them. They are co-eternal, co-equal, co-powerful. Coming to Grips : Coming to Grips Early Christians used this diagram to visualize the Trinity. Coming to Grips : Coming to Grips However, there is a separation in function of the Godhead. God the Father – chooses who will be saved (Eph 1:4) God the Son – redeems those who should be saved (Eph 1:7) God the Holy Spirit – seals those who are saved (Eph 1:13) Coming to Grips : Coming to Grips Without the Trinity there is NO scheme of redemption. Salvation cannot stand without the Trinity. Deity had to die for humanity in order to pay for mankind’s sins. No other sacrifice would do. Thus God had to become man! Historical Problems : Historical Problems The Council of Nicaea- 325 AD The Question: Is Jesus God (deity)? The Players: 230 church leaders. The Problem: Famous heretic named Arius argued that Jesus was not of the same substance as the Father. Jesus was a created being. Athanasius: "If Christ were not truly God, then he could not bestow life upon the repentant and free them from sin and death." Historical Problems : Historical Problems Other councils that dealt with the nature of God. Council of Constantanople (381) repudiated Arianism and declared that Christ is "born of the Father before all time“ Council of Chalcedon (451) full humanity and deity of Christ. Most of the major problems in Christianity during the first 400 years were due to aberrant views of the Godhead. The Problem Continues : The Problem Continues Jehovah Witnesses: Jesus is a created being and the Holy Spirit is simply a force. Jesus is Michael the Archangel. "Thus the Father alone is THE God, the Supreme One, to whom all owe worship and to whom all, including the Son, are rightly subject." WatchTower 3/15/1975, pg. 174 The Problem Continues : The Problem Continues Mormonism God was once a man as we are. He walked on another earth before he created ours. God is one of many gods. Christ’s position in the godhead is not an eternal one. The Holy Spirit is a spirit child born by heavenly parents. The Problem Continues : The Problem Continues Pentecostal Oneness (Modalism) There is ONE God who manifests himself in many ways including Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Do not believe the ONE God is a plurality of persons. Baptize “only” in the name of Jesus The Trinity in the Old Testament : The Trinity in the Old Testament The Old Testament hints of the Trinity even though the doctrine is not fully developed until the New Testament. Many biblical doctrines are not fully developed until we get to the New Testament. Some examples include: The Resurrection The Messianic Promise The Sacrifice of Christ The Kingdom The Trinity in the Old Testament : The Trinity in the Old Testament Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Eloheim (God) – The word itself is a plural noun. This hints of the composite nature of God. The Trinity in the Old Testament : The Trinity in the Old Testament Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. The Trinity in the Old Testament : The Trinity in the Old Testament Genesis 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. The Trinity in the Old Testament : The Trinity in the Old Testament Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: The word for “ONE” (Heb: Echad) is the same as found in of Adam and Eve. They were “ONE” flesh although two. They were of the same substance (Gen 2:24). The Trinity in the Old Testament : The Trinity in the Old Testament Isaiah 42:1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. Obviously there is a reference to 3 personages! The Trinity in the Old Testament : The Trinity in the Old Testament Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; Conclusion : Conclusion God is ONE yet consists of 3 personalities. All are equal yet all are distinct. God the Father – Designed the Plan for Man’s Salvation. God the Son – Died for Man’s Sins. God the Holy Spirit – Delivered the Scriptures.
