The Sunday School :

An unauthorized system of assembly The Sunday School

Warning! :

This study will mean very little to you unless you believe in the authority of the scriptures Warning!

Points to Ponder :

Points to Ponder Origin of the Sunday School System? Why did denominations adopt the Sunday School? Methods of Assembly vs. Methods of Teaching What Constitutes a Scriptural Assembly of the Church?

Slide 4:

The Origin of the . . .

The Origin of the Sunday School :

The Origin of the Sunday School Robert Raikes (1736–1811) Anglican Philanthropist Gloucester, England 1780 he launched “The Ragged School.” School for boys in the slums/prison Saw education as key to rehabilitation. Text book: Bible Taught: reading, writing, religion. Sunday was considered the “Christian Sabbath” - factories were closed.

The Origin of the Sunday School :

The Origin of the Sunday School Sunday School: Originally opposed because it threatened “social class” distinction. Elevated “street urchins” to a higher social class. Some factories closed due to loss of labor. Eventually adopted by denominations as a way of teaching the bible to their parishioners – especially the “youth.” Eventually adopted by some Churches of Christ.

Slide 7:

Why Denominations adopted the . . .

Why did Denominations Adopt Sunday Schools? :

Why did Denominations Adopt Sunday Schools? Possible Reasons: There is probably no single reason why the Sunday School system was adopted by the denominational world during the 18th and 19th centuries. However some cultural observations may be of value. 1. Decline in church attendance and decline of religious fervor in the home. 2. Industrialization, two income families with no time to teach bible at home. 3. Innovative spirit among denominations leading to a variety of innovations (ex: cups, classes, instrumental music, etc.)

Slide 9:

What’s wrong with . . .

What is wrong with the Sunday School System? :

What is wrong with the Sunday School System? We are not opposed because . . . 1. Children are taught the Bible 2. Because SS potentially makes Bible learning “fun!” 3. Because SS was implemented in the 18th Century. 4. Because SS is popular with the denominations.

What’s Wrong??? :

What’s Wrong??? The Scriptural issue Where does the Bible Authorize the practice? The Specification issue What are the specific rules for a scriptural assembly? The Sponsorship issue The difference between private gatherings and church assemblies.

The Scriptural Issue :

The Scriptural Issue Where is the Authority for the Class System? “Speak where the Bible Speaks Silent where the Bible is Silent” Col 3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word of in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God our Father through him.

The Scriptural Issue :

The Scriptural Issue Where there is no authorization we have no liberty to add to God’s Word. Re 22:18 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Sunday School is NOT Authorized in the New Testament!

The Scriptural Issue :

The Scriptural Issue Authorized: Assembly for worship in one undivided assembly Singing and making melody in our hearts. Praying together to God. Preaching Giving our of means. Unauthorized: Dividing into classes to be taught the Word of God Singing with a mechanical instrument. Having a choir Taking up multiple collections each week.

The Specification Issue :

The Specification Issue God Specifies that we Assemble Heb 10:24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. There is a Biblical Pattern for how we Assemble!

The Specification Issue :

The Specification Issue The Bible Regulates Church Assemblies One man speaks at a time (1 Cor 14: 31) All things must be decently and in order (1 Cor 14:40) Women are to remain silent in the assembly (1 Cor 14:34) All come together in one place for edification (1 Cor 14:23) There is no pattern , example or authorization for calling the church together and then dividing into separate assemblies.

The Specification Issue :

The Specification Issue All together in ONE assembly for Worship! Acts 2:1 – Day of Pentecost all together in one group. Acts 20:7 – Disciples came together to break bread. 1 Cor 11:20 – In one place to eat the Lord’s Supper 1 Cor 14:23 – The whole church comes together into one place. 1 Cor 16:1-2 – Whole church came together to give.

The Specification Issue :

The Specification Issue What is the Class System? Is the Class System (Sunday School) a method of teaching? Is the Class System (Sunday School) a method of assembly? The Scriptures Regulates Method’s of Assembly

The Specification Issue :

Methods of Teaching? Methods of Assembly? Didactic Method Socratic Method Illustrative Method These methods might utilize: PowerPoint, Chalk Board Charts, Handouts, etc. One or more speakers A building, a shade tree, etc. Undivided Assembly Divided Assembly ? The Specification Issue The Class System is a Method of Assembly!

The Specification Issue :

The Specification Issue Class System IS: A means of classification A means of assembly Class System is NOT: A method of teaching Classification by itself never taught anyone anything!

The Specification Issue :

The Specification Issue If we may “Classify” then HOW shall we do so? Age? Spiritual maturity? Gender? Weight? Color of hair? Economic status? IQ? The Bible NEVER Classifies so as to exclude someone from a public assembly!

The Specification Issue :

The Specification Issue If we may divide the assembly for teaching . . . What about for . . . Lord’s Supper? The Giving? The Singing? The Prayer? Every Part of Public Worship is Corporate!!!

The Sponsorship Issue :

The Sponsorship Issue Who Sponsors or “calls together” the assembly? When the church comes together for worship that assembly must follow the rules of 1 Corinthian 14. Leaders (ex: Elders) have the right to call the church together for spiritual purposes (worship, prayer, teaching, etc.) When this occurs, scriptural rules apply!

The Sponsorship Issue :

The Sponsorship Issue Two Basic Gatherings . . . . Public – assembly of the church, public, church sponsored. House to house - non-church assembly, private, small group, may be exclusionary, individually sponsored. Ac 20:20 "how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house,

The Sponsorship Issue :

Church Assembly (Public) House to house (Private) Called by leaders Sponsored by Church Rules of 1 Cor 14 apply Women may NOT teach Public and open to all No division or class Formal Called by Individual Sponsored by Individual 1 Cor 14 does NOT apply Women may teach Small group Private Informal The Sponsorship Issue

The Sponsorship Issue :

The Sponsorship Issue The problem with Sunday School . . . Is neither truly public or private Classifies Overseen by the Elders of the local congregation. Women Teachers Focus on the Youth Undermines the home’s role

The Sponsorship Issue :

The Sponsorship Issue What about Private Studies? Are they sponsored by the corporate church? Are they publically advertised? Are they open to the public? Do they allow a forum for a woman to step outside of her God given role?

Conclusion :

Conclusion No matter how good an idea seems to be, unless it is authorized by God’s Word it must not be implemented.
