HIDDEN DANGER IN THE CLASSROOM Filipina M. Ranada:

HIDDEN DANGER IN THE CLASSROOM Filipina M. Ranada

Slide 2:

The true aim of education is not merely the cultivation of the intellect but also the formation of moral character. ( New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia )

Slide 3:

In the moral sense, character is the inner disposition to act in morally good ways as situations present themselves Home and school should collaborate to develop virtues in children.

Slide 4:

A virtue is an habitual and firm disposition to do the good. It allows the person not only to perform good acts, but to give the best of himself. The virtuous person tends toward the good with all his sensory and spiritual powers; he pursues the good and chooses it in concrete actions. (CCC 1803)

Slide 5:

CCC # 1804. Human virtues are firm attitudes, stable dispositions, habitual perfections of intellect and will that govern our actions, order our passions, and guide our conduct according to reason and faith. They make possible ease, self-mastery, and joy in leading a morally good life. The virtuous man is he who freely practices the good.

Slide 6:

The cardinal virtues Prudence -- disposes practical reason to discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it (CCC 1806) Justice -- consists in the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neighbor (CCC 1807)

Slide 7:

Fortitude -- ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of the good (CCC 1808) Temperance -- moderates the attraction of pleasures and provides balance in the use of created goods; ensures the will's mastery over instincts and keeps desires within the limits of what is honorable (CCC 1809)

Slide 8:

Faith is the theological virtue by which we believe in God and believe all that he has said and revealed to us, and that Holy Church proposes for our belief, because he is truth itself. By faith "man freely commits his entire self to God."[78] For this reason the believer seeks to know and do God's will. (CCC 1814)

Slide 9:

Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ's promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit. (CCC 1817)

Slide 10:

Charity is the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God. (CCC 1822)

Slide 11:

The first and primary source of moral instruction is the family. ( Familiaris Consortio) As the Scriptures say: Train a child in the way he should go, when he is old he will not turn from it. (Proverbs 22:6)

Slide 12:

From The Truth and Meaning of Human Sexuality, Guidelines for Education within the Family, Introduction The Situation and the Problem 1. giving children an adequate preparation for adult life, particularly with regard to education in the true meaning of sexuality .

Slide 13:

the decline of traditional models has left children deprived of consistent and positive guidance

Slide 14:

mass media provide depersonalized, recreational and often pessimistic information about sex; sex reduced to the level of pleasure and commodity

Slide 15:

information does not take into account the different stages of formation and development of children and young people it is influenced by a distorted individualistic concept of freedom lacks the basic values of life, human love and the family.

Slide 16:

The school, through sex education provides the same information.

Slide 17:

Parents find themselves unprepared to meet the situation and to provide adequate answers. They have given up their duty in this field and delegate this duty to others because of the difficulty and their own lack of preparation

Slide 18:

Secularization of education through the years In the 1950’s GMRC -- Inculcating virtues and discipline, modeling proper behavior In the 1960’s through the 1970’s New Attitudes and experimentation with human sexuality, religion, career options, lifestyles, personal values

Slide 21:

proponent of the International Guidelines on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights document calls on governments to ensure a right to safe and legal abortion , to legalize same-sex marriages , to legalize prostitution , and to provide graphic sexual and homosexual education to children . The document also seeks the establishment of "criminal penalties" for people engaged in speech construed to be a "vilification" of homosexuality.

Slide 24:

1992 The Delhi Declaration To increase the demand for FP from 300 million users at present to 600 million by the year 2000. To provide youth unlimited access to health information, education and services. (These include safe abortion, contraceptive commodities delivery such as pills and condoms)

Slide 25:

To work for the removal of all institutional barriers to programs for young people which will help positive and responsible manner To teach sex education in all primary schools before children reach puberty; after it is too late, and not all adolescents go to secondary school

Slide 26:

To include physiology, sexuality, emotional involvement, masturbation, assertiveness, STD’s, safe sex, safer sex, contraception and child spacing, environment, homosexuality, pornography, and safe abortion To involve the whole community, including religious and community leaders (N: In the Philippines, religious opposition combined with competing claims for resources have prevented government service provision).

Slide 27:

To work with NGO’s to inform young people about their sexuality and the services available To use all media to inform, educate; pop songs, TV and radio soap opera, comics such as those produced by Kabalikat Reach Out Foundation and ENTER Educate To provide reproductive health services including safe abortion (not to wait for late abortions) push early termination of pregnancy using vacuum aspiration).

Slide 30:

Sexuality Information and Education Council of the U.S. (SIECUS ) incorporated in 1964 Mary Stiechen Calderone is the founder and the first president develops, collects, and disseminates information promotes comprehensive education about sexuality advocates the right of individuals to make responsible sexual choices

Slide 31:

To mould the behavior, attitudes and thinking of the next generations towards: family planning reproductive health feminism rights of children euthanasia same sex marriage divorce abortion

Slide 32:

What is comprehensive sex education? Abstinence – non penetrative sex Information about contraception Information on relationships Decision-making, assertiveness Skill building to resist social/peer pressure

Slide 33:

Goals of comprehensive sex education prevent pregnancy reduce health risks to teenagers build self esteem and positive mental attitude prevent sexual abuse

Slide 34:

promote respect for all kinds of families develop tolerant attitude towards gender options embrace a pragmatic view of religion adapt a set of pluralistic and secular values

Slide 35:

Defining tenets of comprehensive sex education 1. The first principle is that children are "sexual from birth." 2. The second principle excludes parents in the education of children about sex because parents distort the meaning of sex.

Slide 36:

3. The third principle is that sex education must be in conducted in the schools. 4. The fourth principle is that sex educators must point to the statistics. 5. The fifth principle is that sex education must begin in the earliest grades

Slide 37:

Core Area 1 Family life and responsible parenthood Responsible parenthood is the foundation of family stability and solidarity

Slide 38:

Core area 2 Gender and development Gender equality and equity are essential to development

Slide 39:

Core area 3 Population and reproductive health Reproductive health is a human right. Core Area 4 Population , resources, environment and sustainable development

Slide 40:

The history of sex education .a.k.a. Population Education (Pop Ed) in the Philippines

Slide 41:

Population education is an educational program which provides for the study of population situation in the family, community, nation and the world, with the purpose of developing the student's rational and responsible attitudes to behaviour toward that situation. (UNESCO, 1971)

Slide 42:

sex education family life education family planning education

Slide 43:

Population Education was first implemented in 1973 by the Ministry of Education Culture and Sports with the financial assistance of the UNFPA

Slide 44:

Goals to implement integration of population control programs, i.e., family planning in the curriculum to extol the “merits” of family planning

Slide 45:

to make students aware of their responsibility to help curb Rapid Population Growth (RPG) to make students aware of the adverse consequences of RPG

Slide 46:

From a Grade 6 textbook: Rapid population growth (RPG) is a serious problem. In order to address this problem, the Philippine government created the Commission on Population otherwise known as POPCOM. Its goal is to reduce the current high population growth rate to help families maintain certain ideal standards of living.

Slide 47:

. . . POPCOM undertakes an intensive drive to control RPG properly. On population education, Presidential Decree No. 965 requires all couples planning to marry to receive counseling on family planning. Other government agencies: Department of Education, Culture and Sports, and the Department of Health

Slide 48:

Population Education is also taught in elementary, secondary and collegiate levels in order to inculcate the values of population control. Source: INTO THE FUTURE: SCIENCE AND HEALTH (SEMP/TEEP), Textbook for Science and Health for Grade Six, Pp 88 – 104, Rapid Population Growth

Philosophy Sex education is a requisite to raise the level of awareness of children on family planning, human sexuality, population growth and health. Human fertility must be reduced. Lester Kirkendall

Slide 52:

Sex education: a subtle attack against the family AREAS OF CONCERN

Slide 53:

First Concern Hegemonic agenda Purge minds of traditional values Train everyone for voluntary compliance Destroy factual basis for resistance

Slide 54:

Second concern Strategies C onditioning , or softening-up process primarily for control purposes. I ndoctrination or persuasion process for conversion purposes.

Slide 55:

Third concern Spiralling curriculum vertical integration horizontal integration

Slide 56:

Slide 57:

Fifth concern Disintegration of the family “Render the father as an unnecessary member of the family . . . An irresponsible husband, a wife beater, and a child abuser. A wife whose husband like this will refuse to have children.” Kingsley Davis, Population policy and the Theory of Reproductive Motivation

Slide 58:

“ Lead the mother to hate pregnancy and motherhood.” Develop in her the contraceptive-abortion mentality

Slide 59:

“ Lessen the identity of children with their parents, or lessen the likelihood that this identity is satisfying.” “The school is the best agency through which the children can be alienated from their parents.”

Slide 60:

Confuse students about the concepts of marriage and family life

Slide 61:

1993 Home Economics Module 1 for Third Year, p. 5, third paragraph; Responsible Sexuality and Responsible Parenthood “The Biblical concept of marriage is of perfect unity, harmony and love.” (Judaean) “Marriage is the union of one or more men to one or more women.”

Slide 62:

“Marriage resembles a pair of scissors so joined together, often moving in opposite directions, yet always punishing anything that comes in between.”

Slide 64:

Develops radical feminist outlook The sexes are in a natural state of ongoing conflict. Women have to do battle against men in order to remove all distinctions and discriminations. Women should be liberated from all forms of slavery, especially marriage, childbearing, and domestic work .

Slide 65:

gender roles are socially constructed deny the distinct reproductive functions of men and women gender roles are learned and they can be "deconstructed" equality of women with men through liberation from biological determinism

Slide 66:

Slide 69:

The ARH Module on p. 145 also encourages recourse to “safe abortion”. It says abortion is a reproductive right. Selected examples of reproductive rights: The right to the benefits of scientific progress: Traditionally understood to relate to technology transfers between countries of the North and the South. Now, could also include, for example, recognition that a woman’s right to control her own reproduction would obviously be enhanced by: access to microbicides, female controlled methods of contraception, research into a greater range of male contraceptives and access to safe abortion

Slide 70:

Sixth concern Development of anti-sibling mentality among the learners through lessons that promote small family size norm

Slide 71:

Population Education prescribes and fosters small family norm.

Slide 72:

Slide 74:

Science and Health, Grade 3 SEMP. Carmelita Coronel and Norma Abracia Observe some families in your neighborhood. Are there families with 2 or 3 children? Are there families with 5 or 6 children? Which family needs to buy more food and clothing? Which family needs a bigger place to live in? Is your family big or small? Do you get enough of your needs?

Slide 75:

Lesson 7 – Social Studies 1 First year high school Gawain: Sumulat ng maikling talata na nagsasaad ng pangako sa sarili na makiki-isa sa mga programa ng pamahalaan sa pagpigil ng paglaki ng populasyon pagdating ng tamang panahon.

Slide 76:

Effect Develops anti-sibling mentality among children; sows the seeds of selfishness in them

Slide 77:

Seventh concern Premature sexualization of children

Slide 78:

IPPF says sex education is concerned with reproductive biology and hygiene. The reality is that sex education desensitizes children about sex. It teaches learners that individuals are in charge of and responsible for their own bodies

Slide 79:

It encourages the acquisition of skills and attitudes which allow pupils to manage their relationships in a "responsible and healthy manner."

Slide 80:

Kindergarten Enhanced Population Education Module, 1996 edition Sensory perceptual skills; Lesson: Reproductive health Objective: Observe proper ways of caring for genitals Preparatory activity: Activity 1: We have learned about the parts of the body. Now, let’s play the game “Simon says.” Be sure to follow what Simon says: Touch your neck, hair Touch your nose, ears, genitals Point to your head, mouth, etc.

Slide 81:

Activity 2: Pupils are going to answer these questions: Why do you wash your face? ears? nose? Genital? How do you wash your face? ears? nose? Genital?

Slide 82:

Activity 3 Let’s do these things again while singing the song: “This is the way. . .” This is the way I wash my face I wash my face, I wash my face This is the way I wash my face So early in the morning. (Substitute, brush my teeth; wash my genitals)

Slide 83:

Grade 1 – Science and Health Lesson: Reproductive Health Demonstration – Teacher demonstrates how to bathe a doll. After the demonstration, the teacher ask the students to do the same and ask the questions: What other parts of the body must be cleaned well? How do you clean your ears, nose, genitals?

Slide 84:

St. Thomas Aquinas definition of the natural law: “It is nothing other than the light of understanding infused in us by God, whereby we understand what must be done and what must be avoided. God gave this light and this law to man at creation.”

Slide 85:

Physical laws or man’s biology are not irrelevant to natural law, for man’s biology is a constitutive part of his personhood. The human person is a unity of body and soul and that certain natural inclinations of the body are revealing of the good to which human nature is ordained.

Slide 86:

Grade 3 – Lesson 3 Health Education Lesson: Reproductive health Prevention and control of reproductive health problems Competencies – Recognize the importance of avoiding the practice of risky behavior Demonstrate ways of avoiding risky behavior.

Slide 87:

Slide 89:

A similar lesson can also be found in the Lesson Guide on Adolescent Reproductive Health (which is actually a rehash of the old modules), p 54, letter d which says among other things: From the brief discussion of some Reproductive Tract Infections (RTIs) specially STIs, adolescents should take note of the following: Delay onset of sexual activity by abstaining from vaginal and anal intercourse until married or in a stable relationship Learn how to use condoms correctly

Slide 90:

Slide 95:

Grade 3 – Lesson 3 Lesson: Reproductive health Health Education Prevention and control of reproductive health problems Competencies – Recognize the importance of avoiding the practice of risky behavior Demonstrate ways of avoiding risky behavior.

Slide 96:

Third Year – Values Education – Revitalized Homeroom Guidance Program 5 . Do all women bleed and experience pain during their first intercourse? Not necessarily. Bleeding and pain during the first intercourse depend on many factors, the more important ones being: (a) how relaxed she is; (b) how gentle her partner is; (c) how much time and privacy the couple has and (d) how rigid the hymen is (if it is present at all)

Slide 97:

Is too much sex physically harmful? No, because there is no such thing as too much sex. Generally speaking, under normal circumstances, sexual intercourse and masturbation are self-limiting. When one has had enough, this level varies from person to person, one will stop.

Slide 98:

1998 The Gallup Organization Despite a much smaller teen population and despite more frequent contraceptive use, about 1.1 million teenagers became pregnant in 1991 – roughly the same figure as for the last ten years. Forty percent of today’s fourteen year old girls will become pregnant by the time they are nineteen.

Slide 99:

Alan Guttmacher Institute- teen pregnancy rates increased an alarming 23 percent from 1972 to 1990- the period during which "comprehensive sex education" (contraceptive education) began and became widespread.

Slide 100:

a shocking one-third of the 20 million annual cases of sexually transmitted disease (STD) strike junior-high and senior high-school students, many of whom become sterile for life

Slide 101:

Early adolescence – experimenting; risk-taking Late adolescence – turning back; they realize that they have something good to do

Slide 102:

Stage of Latency Compassion -- cruelty Creativity -- destruction Intelligence -- dullness

Slide 103:

Dr. Melvin Anchell: At this stage of a child’s development, his redirected sexual energy is used for the development of compassion which is essential for the control of his cruelty impulses as a human being. A child whose compassionate feelings are destroyed by sexual interference , at this stage, i.e., sexual molestation or even sight of pornography or violent scenes, becomes devoid of this emotion when he reaches early adult life.

Slide 104:

A Carnegie Mellon University Study in the US tend to blame pornography and violence in movies, TV and print media for the promiscuous lifestyles of young Americans and sexual crimes that are being committed in the US today (Mla. Bulletin, Sept. 9/19/98, p.9). The study found out that on the average, an 18-year old American has seen 25,000 murders on TV and equal number of perverse behavior. It says that the same is true with Britons.

Slide 105:

Pontifical Council for the Family: The Truth And Meaning Of Human Sexuality, Guidelines For Education Within The Family, Chapter 6.2.1. The Years of Innocence, No. 78:

Slide 106:

This period of tranquility and serenity must never be disturbed by unnecessary information about sex. . . .

Slide 107:

“So as not to disturb this important natural phase of growth, parents will recognize that prudent formation in chaste love during this period should be indirect, in preparation for puberty, when direct information will be necessary. “

Slide 108:

In view of the close links between the sexual dimension of the person and his or her ethical values, education must bring the children to a knowledge of and respect for moral norms as the necessary and highly valuable guarantee for responsible personal growth in human sexuality

Slide 109:

For this reason , the Church is firmly opposed to an often widespread form of imparting sex information dissociated from moral principles. That would merely be an introduction to the experience of pleasure and a stimulus leading to the loss of serenity – while still in the years of innocence – by opening the way to vice.

Slide 110:

Eight concern Leads children to construct their own system of values without reference to objective moral standards

Slide 111:

“ Why can't Johnny tell right from wrong? Because we're not teaching him the difference between the two . Because we're relying instead on an experimental approach - an experiment in having children construct their own morality. William Kilpatrick, Experiments in Moral Education

Slide 112:

Values clarification All answers are correct There is no right or wrong experience All values are relative.

Slide 113:

Sample Lesson (1993 Module on Values Education, 1st Year) " Ang pagpili ko ng mga mithiin ko sa buhay ay batay sa aking pagpapahalaga . . . Ang mga pagpapahalaga ko ay siyang nagbibigay patnubay sa aking daraanan . . . Ang paglinaw ko ng aking mithiin o pangarap sa buhay ay susi sa pag-unlad ng aking pangarap.”.

Introductory statement in all the 1993 high school modules: Values Education, 1 st year " Walang maling kasagutan sa mga pagsasanay sa mga modyul na ito, sapagkat ang pinagbabatayan ay ang sariling pagpapahalaga.“

Slide 116:

Slide 119:

Ninth concern Development of secular and humanist values in children

Slide 120:

Slide 121:

Edukasyong Pagpapahalaga Module 1 for Fourth year.

Slide 122:

What the Lord says: “ You shall teach my people to distinguish between the sacred and the profane and make known to them the difference between the clean and the unclean” (Eze. 44:23) Their lustful ways will lure many away. Through them the true way will be made subject to contempt.” (2 Peter 2:2)

Slide 123:

The Self –Esteem Approach Carl Rogers, popularized the “ human potential movement” and is an illuminating star among the New Agers. New York University psychology professor Paul Clayton Vitz has identified it, “the cult of self-worship.”

Slide 124:

The Human Potential Movement gave birth to the terms that always center on the Self: self-confidence self-potential self-awareness self-acceptance self-love self-image self-esteem self-fulfillment self-development self-assertion self-actualization

Slide 125:

Slide 133:

70% of teens who are involved in church youth groups will stop attending church within two years of their high school graduation Less than 1/3 of today’s youth attend church

Slide 135:

According to official Church figures, 95% of teenagers in the US Catholic school system leave the Church. In the Record newspaper, Archbishop Barry Hickey referred to " A particular Catholic secondary school ," where " not one boy or girl in Year 12 went to Mass. This floored me ", he continued. "I had no idea how bad the situation had become. " The loss of young people to the active life of the Church will have catastrophic long term effects on our Catholic population if we do not address it with energy, wisdom and prayer ." (Saint Gabriel Communications" <admin@saintgabriel.com.au> Record, 21.8.03 )

Slide 136:

What kind of education should be given?

Slide 137:

Parents should teach their children: Dignity of the human person Theology of the body – God’s plan for man and woman Truth and meaning of human sexuality Difference between the sexes Formation of conscience

Slide 138:

Schools should implement a chastity program that is in consonance with the teachings of the Church on matters of sexuality, marriage and family teaches the value and dignity of every human person restores Christian values promotes the Culture of Life

Slide 139:

What Should Be Done

Slide 140:

Immediate: Screen the books and all instructional materials Launch information dissemination campaigns Produce our own teaching modules Revitalize Catechism in the public schools as well as in the private schools

Slide 141:
